Should be an exciting and seriously competitive renewal, full of unexposed chasers some of whom are unproven in the grade. Applying my usual methods/projections to predict the adjusted ratings the figures come out:
Might Bite 172
Frodon 168
Anibale Fly 165So I have backed Might Bite (Win) at 8/1 because I have him clear top.
Might Bite is one who has to prove himself at this level, having never tried it, and I am slightly worried about his jumping but that may be helped by being up in trip. That he happens to be a bigger price than the other two may be a bonus.
December 26, 2016 at 14:14 #1278517I could see that happening why didnt Jacob steady him into it.
Crazy…………

December 26, 2016 at 14:15 #1278518Bad luck GM, I had a bit on him too. It was in the bag until he didn’t get a stride at the last
December 26, 2016 at 14:16 #1278519You could see it about to happen…. shades of Barton Bank there.
December 26, 2016 at 14:17 #1278520Somebody should have bought Jacob a set of wing mirrors for Christmas. I feel your pain Golden Miller.
December 26, 2016 at 14:19 #1278521unlucky GM no wonder i dont bet the hedgehoppers,still a great call
December 26, 2016 at 16:05 #1278569You may say I am talking out of my pocket here having backed MIGHT BITE at 8/1 7/1 and 13/2 but what the hell was Jacob doing?
There am I sat on the sofa watching the race and after the second last I actually said “sit still” and then when he started riding like a madman said”look behind” and what happens crash!!
Call me an armchair jockey but for gods sake anyone with any sense could see the horse was clear and had been jumping more than adequately without being asked too much and what does he do? CRAZY!!
If I was Hendo I wouldn’t let him near any of my horses after that. I know he has to ride the Munir horses but I wouldn’t let him even ride work on anything else!!
December 26, 2016 at 17:59 #1278591Agree Raymo
He did have a look around before the 2nd last
It was unlike Jacob, who usually likes to sit there motionless
I think the horse gave him a great spin round and he was showboating, why else go for a spectacular jump at the last at that pace when not needed.
Jacob wanted his name in lightsCharles Darwin to conquer the World
December 26, 2016 at 18:12 #1278598Had Jacob known he was so far clear, don’t think he’d have gone so quick in to the last or asked Might Bite up off such a long stride. Unlucky GM.
Value Is EverythingDecember 26, 2016 at 18:14 #1278599It was a strange piece of riding given his usual bridle style. That said I much prefer jocks who are positive, particularly as they are a dwindling number. The problem I think in this case was that Jacob started driving the horse but he didn’t keep the revs up all the way to fence.
December 26, 2016 at 19:23 #1278615Thanks for the commiserations, to say it was rather annoying is an understatement :) If I’d sent Daryl Jacob a Christmas card I’d ask for it back! As I mentioned, I was a little concerned by the horse’s jumping. I think improvement in it led to a performance even better than I expected but, whether he knew the horse’s history or not (and it’s his job to), the last should have been popped. I agree with a lot of the comments above. What is particularly galling is this abomination follows Jacob’s ride on West Of The Edge at Ayr on Monday where he did sit still and do nothing (on a stayer) when that horse was travelling all over everything and then got done for toe. If he was a member of a football team he’d be benched for a month! No wonder it didn’t work out for him at Paul Nicholls’.
He is not alone, Brennan did exactly the same thing in the same circumstances on Barney Dwan’s Chase debut earlier in the season at Kempton (& that after Cue Card in the GC!) Compare it to Richard Johnson on Poker School today, he needed to go for it to seal victory and got it right.
Frodon was beaten in 3rd when coming down and didn’t quite stay. Anibale Fly was never travelling.
December 26, 2016 at 19:43 #1278621Very unlucky GM – great call.
Jacob suffered from the downside of high confidence in a jockey, probably thinking he’d ridden a brilliant race and was right at the top of his game. Can’t get a better example of pride before a fall
December 26, 2016 at 19:47 #1278624I was waiting for you to comment Joe.
I am always interested to hear your views on both horses and jockeys.
I still think he rode a shocker and virtually put the horse on the floor!!
December 26, 2016 at 20:01 #1278626Aye, Raymo – rush of blood to the head for Daryl who’s had more than his share of ups and downs and that one today might stick in his head for a while and affect his riding.
December 26, 2016 at 23:28 #1278646Similar rush of blood to Paddy Brennan in the Gold Cup, in my opinion. Trying something when there was absolutely no need for it.
He checked where the field was before the second last – 5 or 6 lengths clear. Jumps it and then rides his tiring novice ( must have known he’d gone quickly from the front ) into the final fence like he’s neck and neck in the RSA
Very poor from Jacob – unusally so.
They should put him in the 4 miler.
December 28, 2016 at 18:58 #1278994That was very unlucky Golden Miller, and though it was a clear cut case of jockey error, I do hope D Jacob can recover from this as he is a rather fragile character.
January 2, 2017 at 09:35 #1279805Yet another victory turned into defeat by Jacob in the Relkeel because he briefly lost an iron in a tight finish. No surprise he was outridden by Lizzie Kelly. I don’t understand why she is not employed by outside trainers.
