Last years race is a bit iffy Clive, one contender fell, one burst, the fav (former TH winner) ran no sort of race at all
So thats 2 reasonable contenders and fav done for, which brings into question the form, imo
October 29, 2007 at 12:22 #122101There are Triumph Hurdle winners and there are Triumph Hurdle winners. The race is usually won by something that is the best of a fairly unexceptional bunch. It is not usually won in a really good time and by 9 lengths by something that follows up at the Grand National meeting and defies a mark of 159 first time up the following season.
The 5-y-o stat is a good one, as it means that you are likely to get a better price about a genuine 5-y-o contender than you should. True, it often takes a horse a two or three seasons to gain experience and work its way through into the top league. You may think that Katchit isn’t good enough, but surely no-one thinks that he is a horse who needs another season or two to reach his peak.

Not sure where you are going there. If the form is iffy, then Sublimity is not the fine winner some would suggest (i would agree with that). Brave inca might have run a fair bit below form but Afsoun ran much better than expected, whichever way you look at it…
pru…totally agree
October 29, 2007 at 12:31 #122104I’m not an AP player, but if i did play AP, i’d look deeper in the TH relevance as it seems interesting
I think you may be right about Katchit being better than the norm Pru and it will be interesting to see how he goes on his next couple of starts

Clive i was just trying to point out that Afsoun run last year may not be a good yardstick, i could be wrong of course and that form may turn out solid
October 29, 2007 at 12:34 #122106Could Katchit have peaked already?
Just a thought ……….he has had quite a busy career.

I’d like to see another run at least Colin, before stating yes or no
October 29, 2007 at 14:23 #122127At this point in time Katchit certainly couldn’t be discounted with any confidence but Straw Bear, if he returns none-the-worse for his injury, will be tough to beat.
The other one I like is Punjabi, who finished 4th behind Alan King’s horse in the Triumph and then 2nd at Aintree. He was far from impressive over in Ireland when getting the better of Financial Reward, but he’s a little bull of a horse and really took the eye in his victories prior to Cheltenham. With another year behind him I’d hope he can improve to become a top class 2m hurdler.
The only thing that does worry me is that he travelled all over the Triumph field, cruised to the lead turning for home but weakened very quickly when hitting the hill. Whether he had a wind problem or just wasn’t physically up to it, I don’t know, but it’s a nagging thought at the back of my mind nonetheless.
October 29, 2007 at 15:57 #122138I thought Straw Bear was going the novice chasing route this season?
I like Punjabi very much, although his best performances have been round sharper tracks like Kempton and Aintree. However, a year stronger may make him a leading contender for Cheltenham.
The horse of interest for me is Detroit City and whether his problems have been eradicated and to which route he takes this season. His Greatwood Hurdle reappearance last year is still vivid in my mind despite his failures at the end of the season.
October 29, 2007 at 16:15 #122142Ebizyan (spelling?) anyone?
October 29, 2007 at 18:47 #122169I strongly suspect Clopf wants no worse than good ground and a flat track – even on good ground I could see him folding up the hill.
October 29, 2007 at 22:33 #122213Regarding TH winners winning the CH, I can only think of Persian War and Kribensis, See You Then was second I think.
Actually Katchit reminds me a little of Kribensis, similar small horse, great attitude, though not the Flat speed. Wonder whether the CH would be too much this season, though saying that the current crop are at best average, still don’t know how good Sublimity is.October 30, 2007 at 00:12 #122222HI LADS

Apologies if you already knew this.October 30, 2007 at 02:06 #122227I can’t help but love this horse, as soon as Degas Art moved up the inner travelling well I knew Katchit would battle and win. I reckon he’s the next Champion Hurdler.
October 30, 2007 at 07:53 #122240I still can’t quite believe that Katchit has the class to win a champion, but boy does he have an appetite for a battle.
October 30, 2007 at 08:13 #122245The one thing I do like about Katchit is his ability to gain lengths at his hurdles and his traveling speed. This is something that all good hurdlers have like Sublimity. I do believe Katchit will challenge Sublimity for favoritism on the day of the CH.
