The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, DEVIL YOU KNOW (IRE), ridden by Phillip Makin and trained by M W Easterby, compared with the gelding’s previous run at Southwell on 5th October, where it finished last, beaten 51 lengths. Having received a report from the trainer’s representative, that the gelding is well suited by Kempton having won here previously, the Stewards decided not to hold an enquiry. They ordered DEVIL YOU KNOW (IRE) to be routine tested.
Would have qualified with another bad run sadly. The 7l lose at Catterick was on the borderline of "rateable."
Also good to see

following up tonight.
75-58 and now 58-65 prior to tonight’s win.

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of MISTER HYDE (IRE), ridden by A.P. McCoy and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which finished second, beaten two and a half lengths, having appeared to be tenderly ridden until the closing stages. They interviewed the Rider and Trainer. The Rider stated that his instructions were to get the gelding to run as well as possible and most of all to get it to finish. He added that he made an effort at the end of the back straight but felt that the front runners were not coming back to him. Having picked the gelding up after the second last, MISTER HYDE (IRE) responded and finished well past tiring horses. The Trainer confirmed these instructions, adding that the gelding has been very disappointing in his previous runs and is very flighty at home. Having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action.
So what was it? Tenderly ridden or not? A trainer, Jonjo O’Neill, really told a jockey like McCoy to try to get it to finish? Well I would hope the aim as standard would be to achieve that as a minimum…. and from what I can see, the horse has always "finished."
Don’t worry, Mr Jake Greenall can be banned for 10 days for failing to take
all reasonable and permissible measures throughout a race
. That part is easy…
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, ADORABLE CHOICE (IRE), ridden by R. Kingscote and trained by T. Dascombe, as compared with her previous run at Fairyhouse on 19th September, where she finished twentieth, beaten thirty-seven lengths, but having received a report of the trainer’s representative’s explanation that the filly was better suited by today’s all-weather surface and had been badly drawn on her last run, they decided not to hold an enquiry. The Stewards ordered ADORABLE CHOICE (IRE)to be routine tested.
I would like to know why the BHA are asking for an explanation for a horse that had its last run in Ireland. I take it all Irish trained horses who come over and do similar things will have their connections questioned? Oh wait, Mr P Smith even re-handicaps them on those efforts.
October 31, 2010 at 00:53 #325545It’s interesting with the BHA stewards report search function when you search for the word “tenderly[/color:1x6re4ea].”
So far in 2010 we have had the following cases;
TRIP SWITCH – CHARLOTTE KERTON/ G PRODROMOU, Lingfield 27th January 2010 – 10 day ban for the rider.
MOUNTAIN FOREST – Miss N DUMELOW/ H MORRISON, Southwell 2nd February 2010 – 10 day ban for the rider.
WHATDOYOUCALLIT – DONAL FAHY/ E WILLIAMS, 8th March 2010 – 14 day ban for the rider under rule (B) 59.2 and trainer fined £3000 for being in breach of rule (C) 45, horse banned for 3 months.
VALMARI – CHARLOTTE KERTON/ G PRODROMOU, Kempton 16th April 2010 – referred to BHA towers, the penalties are somewhere on the internet. Roughly the same as the above case apart from the fact the rider got longer, I think.
MAID IN HEAVEN – SHANE KELLY/ W R SWINBURN, Warwick 3rd May 2010 – best to copy and paste.
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of MAID IN HEAVEN (IRE), ridden by Shane Kelly and trained by W R Swinburn, which finished sixth, beaten 7 lengths having appeared to be tenderly ridden in the final half furlong. They interviewed the rider who stated that he was able to settle the filly in behind early on and was tracking the leaders as they turned for home. However, when asked to quicken in the home straight, MAID IN HEAVEN (IRE) found little, changed her legs and would not have finished closer for more vigorous riding approaching the line. Having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action.
[/size:1x6re4ea]BELLE BOLEYN – TED DURCAN/ C F WALL, Nottingham 10th June 2010 – best to copy and paste.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of BELLE BOLEYN, ridden by Ted Durcan and trained by C F Wall, which finished fourth beaten thirteen lengths, having appeared to be tenderly handled throughout before making late progress in the final stages. The Stewards interviewed Ted Durcan who stated that on this, the filly’s first run, his instructions were to establish a position amongst the pack, to avoid racing wide and to do his best. He added that, having suffered interference immediately after the start, which resulted in BELLE BOLEYN being carried wide, he was obliged to settle his mount in the rear. When asked to make progress in the home straight the filly became unbalanced, and showed signs of greenness. Having heard his evidence, viewed a video recording of the race, and having received a report from the Veterinary Officer, the Stewards noted the rider’s explanation and took no further action.[/size:1x6re4ea]
SOCIETY VENUE – SAM THOMAS/ M J Scuadmore, Uttoxeter 27th June 2010 – best to copy and paste.
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of SOCIETY VENUE, ridden by Sam Thomas and trained by M.J. Scudamore, which finished fifth, beaten twenty five and a half lengths, having appeared to be tenderly ridden. They interviewed the Rider. Mr Thomas stated that the gelding is a difficult ride and doubtful stayer and that his instructions were to settle him to get the trip and get the gelding relaxed and jumping and to do his best. He added that SOCIETY VENUE was warm in the preliminaries and was headstrong in the early stages, jumping moderately. He added that he was able to settle his mount somewhat in rear but that SOCIETY VENUE was not fluent in his jumping. He further stated that he was able to make progress on the final bend turning for home, however some distance behind the first three leaders which had gone well clear. He further stated that SOCIETY VENUE tired, jumping the penultimate flight particularly badly, and would not have finished any closer for more vigorous riding. Having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards noted this explanation and took no further action.
The Veterinary Officer reported that, following the race, the gelding was lame on its right-fore.[/size:1x6re4ea]WAABEL – ROBERT L BUTLER/ J BEST, Yarmouth 20th July 2010 – rider given 10 day ban under (B) 59.4 and the most bizarre part is next. “They found the trainer in breach of Rule (C) 46 (b) in that the trainer’s representative was unaware of the rider’s instructions and fined the trainer £290.”
THOUGHTSOFSTARDOM – ALAN MUNRO/ P S MCENTEE, Yarmouth 26th July 2010 – best to copy and paste.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of THOUGHTSOFSTARDOM, ridden by Alan Munro and trained by P S McEntee, which finished 8th of 9, beaten 19¾ lengths, having appeared to be tenderly ridden from halfway. The Stewards interviewed Mr Munro and Mr McEntee. The rider stated his instructions were to track the leaders, to obtain a clear run and to win if he could. He added that the horse faltered, and lost his position halfway when asked to quicken, and felt uneven in his action. Therefore the rider stated that he felt it prudent to ride the gelding sympathetically thereafter. He further stated that he submitted a report regarding his mount’s uneven action when returning to Scales. The trainer confirmed the instructions adding that in the light of the rider’s concerns regarding the welfare of his mount, he was satisfied with the rider’s efforts. Having heard their evidence, viewed a video recording of the race, and having received a report from the Veterinary Officer, the Stewards noted their explanations.
[/size:1x6re4ea]So of those that weren’t banned one horse was green, one was lame after the race, one felt uneven in its action, and one in the opinion of the rider wouldn’t have finished any closer.
I was just looking for the excuse of the Mister Hyde ride and I’ve still not found it, apart from the fact it was supposed to finish.

AJOOLNovember 1, 2010 at 15:45 #325748The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of NOT A BOB (IRE), ridden by Richie McLernon and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which finished fifth, beaten 30 lengths. They interviewed the rider, trainer and Veterinary Officer. The rider stated that his instructions were to drop him in, do his best and try to get him home, as having tried to ride NOT A BOB (IRE) more prominently on his previous run he had faded in the closing stages. He added that, having run keenly early on off a slow pace, he had settled at the end of the straight and was happy with the way he was travelling until coming down the hill when NOT A BOB (IRE) came off the bit, jumped deliberately in the home straight and plugged on to the finish. The trainer confirmed these instructions that he was satisfied with his jockey’s ride. The Veterinary Officer reported that on examination post-race the gelding was sore in his back. Having viewed the video recording of the race, the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action.
The BHA definitely have their eyes fixed on Mr O’Neill.
November 1, 2010 at 20:19 #325798Sometime tomorrow after the Melbourne Cup I’ll round up last week’s statistics. It was something like 1 winner that would have made marginal profit with nothing else.
It looks a decent day’s racing tomorrow in Britain. 3 meetings – 1 in the North at Catterick, Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter and a Class 2 1m 2f Handicap on the AW at Kempton.

Does Spahi (4.15 Catterick) qualify for today? It struck me as odd that Silvestre de Sousa has been booked to ride for David O’Meara rather than Geoff Harker.
November 2, 2010 at 12:59 #325912No, he doesn’t quite qualify. The 2nd run at Catterick appears to me like the BHA handicappers have rated Spahi 57 on the basis of that. The randomised process to get the horse to that stage is the same as normal. A good 3lb drop for being beat 41L for the horses first run in Britain….

Caymans or Sahara Kingdom? Caymans, I think, is the horse who now only has one eye. Actually think he will be suited by longer straights in Britain, but who knows.

November 3, 2010 at 01:05 #326035Important issues on the BHA handicappers blog…
Fair Along winning his only Graded race for the NH season – I do hope I’m wrong with that.
Nacarat winning the Charlie Hall Chase. His rating will matter a lot in the King George.
Massini’s Maguire being lifted to a lifetime high – ridiculous in the extreme. Just return the horse to its previous mark of 150.
Oh and a few Listed races on the AW where they are bemused by the closeness of the finishes at Lingfield. Er, have they never seen any races at Lingfield? It’s the best track in the country for excitement imo.
Finally two low grade horses who have won recently.
Now where was Canal Bank?
November 3, 2010 at 13:59 #326067A big well done to the BHA handicapping team.
Prince Massini, a previous qualifier on this thread, wins again, beating Radmores Revenge, who was a qualifier today.
Who says you have to try in British horse racing?
One could barely finish until it had an amazing turnaround at Uttoxeter, and the other has been beat by 105l, 29l, 78l and 97l.
EDIT
And Godolphin couldn’t even win the Nottingham Conditions Stakes. So that’s a 77 rated winner of a Class 2 Conditions Stakes.November 3, 2010 at 16:38 #326083What do this lot honestly spend their day’s doing at BHA towers?
Black Phantom makes a "mockery" of the handicapping system at Chepstow now.
3 runs over Hurdles. Yes, three runs. Two in novices hurdles, one in a maiden hurdle.
The first of which saw the horse beat 41l by the 109 rated horse, Superius.
The second saw the horse beat 48l by a 121 rated horse.
Black Phantom was receiving weight in both starts.
I know what the best thing is to do – give it a rating of 85.
It has a best RPR of 62.
And to compound things, Zoey Bird described the horse as "unexposed." I realise she’s clueless, but that is the type of thing that says it all.

Thursday’s Qualifiers
(Just discard)
NEARLY A BREEZE
MOUNTRATHAnother interesting horse as well is Jackson. Why does this horse have an AW rating of 50 when it ran hopelessly off 68 on Turf last time? AW racing does not compare to Jebel Ali Dirt, or any real Dirt track.
