Interesting views on turf/aw marks. As Tuffers has probably mentioned in other posts, we have just bought Tourist out of the Derek Shaw yard and sent him to Ian in the hope that he can improve him in the same way that he has done with Feet Of Fury and Carter. Tourist currently has an aw mark of 68, and a turf mark of 55. If we started him on turf and he won a couple with his mark going up to 65, would you forsee him changing the aw mark? Very unlikely. Should he win on the aw and go up to 80. Would he change his turf mark? Very likely. Doesn’t really make sense does it?

ROYAL DEFENCEMay 13, 2011 at 12:40 #355239OSIRIS WAY is a short price currently (7/2) having been fairly generously dropped. Nothing else for today, other than plenty of good racing.
May 16, 2011 at 02:18 #355626Ok, after 40 pages of this thread, it’s now time to the end the day to day updates.
I’m sure it can be allowed to stay to laugh at the handicapping blog, the weekly updates, the next Barney Curley coup, and I will contribute to that, but some facts were established a long time ago and updating it daily is no longer enhancing it.
Backing the "worst" horse/s in any handicap because they’ve been dropped large amounts is definitely not profitable over a long period of time.
There is the undeniable ability to "plot" this way for "coup" reasons and be rewarded.
The current handicap system is a random process that doesn’t help trainers or owners, with regular extreme punishments being dished out for ensuring some races aren’t walkovers being one example.
There’s also the fact I want to get round to doing what I originally signed up to this forum for and that was for discussing "Big Races." (Zarkava will now be terrified )
Displaying some actual enthusiasm for the sport is something my posts on here have certainly lacked.
May 16, 2011 at 19:26 #355726Jose, a cracking effort and I’ll feel free to post any handicapping absurdities I spot on here.
May 16, 2011 at 22:37 #355755God, finally some proper discussion, thank the lord.
May 17, 2011 at 07:16 #355768A well-earned retirement for a fascinating thread.
I suppose that if backing the dross in handicaps doesn’t work then laying them ought to be a profitable strategy. The problem is a horse with say an SP of 25-1 will be about 40-1 on an exchange.
May 17, 2011 at 18:18 #355859Terrific thread Jose, thanks very much
May 18, 2011 at 14:57 #355964kasparov, the bigger price would not be the only issue for "ordinary" people trying that idea. Lay the first horse even at standard SP and it wins? So, to begin with, you’d have to get a bank big enough for how many lays, stake accordingly to the percentage chance of one winning. Simply put, if there’s a robot system out there for that with ordinary amounts of money, I’d like to find out about it.
Drone, I hope it was somewhat informative.
I’m sure many people would have watched this race last week. Good job black-type compensates some of these rating changes. Don’t ask about Flood Plain having no change with Emma’s Gift being dropped one pound.

I thought that was an interesting thing to go public with.
On the recommendation of the Betting Intelligence Department, the Stewards enquired into the running and riding of IT’S A MANS WORLD, ridden by Andrew Heffernan and trained by Kevin M Prendergast, which started 4/1 favourite and finished fifth, beaten 1½ lengths. They interviewed the rider and trainer. The rider stated that his instructions were to jump out, get a lead and ride the gelding to get the trip and to finish. He added that he was outpaced and unable to sit handy and the gelding had stayed on at one pace. The trainer confirmed these instructions. Having viewed the video recording of the race and received reports from both the Veterinary Officer and the Handicapper, the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action.
The thread gets a revival. From the 12th March 2011.
Today, IT’S A MANS WORLD was named as one of the horses as part of the charges.
Without wishing to jump to conclusions, this race and ride (what else goes with it) could also be referred back to at some point in the future.
May 21, 2011 at 17:46 #356497For ‘the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action’ read ‘we don’t believe you but at the moment we can’t prove otherwise’.

I think I’d struggle to remember the last filly to finish 1st in the 1,000G and be eligible for handicaps the following year!
