Clive,
I have said earlier and it is quite true, that if Kauto Star was not around O’Neill would have trained the winner of the last two King Georges and the last Gold Cup and there would be nobody saying he is useless. You have all through this thread been in the camp arguing that O’Neill has under performed and has regressed many horses.
You and the other guys stating this have yet to put anything forward to prove your argument and are relying purely on YOUR perception to back it up. When you can actually prove he is less than a competent trainer will I believe you, though the statistics prove otherwise.

January 11, 2008 at 11:11 #134595So every trainer of a gold cup winner is a top class trainer then?
Basing every opinion on "stats" is a non starter for me. Sometimes its just not feasible and time spent will only go to prove exactly what you already knew. And as has been pointed out above, stats alone do not tell the whole story. I am happy enough to back my judgement on past experience that backing many of Jonjo’s runners in many scenarios is just not an option for me. For a start, I would certainly not pile in on a expensive recruit to his stable making an early appearance

When did I say he was top class Clive? I have continuously said O’Neill is a more than competent trainer, never top class. And if you are basing your argument on your perception Clive and not any opposing statistics then I think we can finish our discussion.

January 11, 2008 at 12:37 #134606Fists, what do you reckon the plot is with his runner in the 3.20 at Huntingdon today?
Raise Your Game is a 7-y-o who has had only the three runs, all over hurdles.
He was second on his debut in December 2006 and then wasn’t seen until last November at Chepstow.
I was at Chepstow that day and I can say that "he definitely needed the run"!!
The stable’s neglected and ridden by Richie McGrath the horse was running on very well at the death and finished ahead of his better fancied stablemate , ridden by A.P.McCOY.
Disappointed on his only start since when 4th. @ 4/1 on heavy ground at Carlisle, again ridden by McGrath.
He is now qualified for handicaps but Jonjo has decided on a chase handicap rather than the more conventional hurdling option. A.P. takes the ride.
Any thoughts?
Colin
I think Jonjo has taken the best option of the two available. Big horse and too one paced for the smaller ones. Will do much better over fences IMO……Mind you If he jumps fences as bad as he jumped the odd hurdle he’ll be having an early shower.
January 11, 2008 at 13:01 #134609Oops, I seem to have started a bit of an argument.
The odd winner seems to be coming through now. Crocodiles Rock ran well yesterday at Hereford; I know he didn’t win but I don’t think that was due to fitness or health.
Maybe the bug or whatever has gone.I do wish Jonjo would be a bit more open in interviews. I have seen a couple on TV when he brushes aside any questions about stable form and comes out with he usual "he’s in grand form, we’re hoping for a good run" etc. A few other trainers seem more helpful when there is a problem in the yard.
January 11, 2008 at 16:52 #134635Jonjo never evades the question……….the press asked him only the other day" Do you have a virus?" he answered them very honestly and said no. Not his fault they never asked about the horses
