Just dug out my last weatherbys statement, novembers. I had two rides netting £282.42 in riding fees after deductions for agent (10% of gross earnings rides and percentages) compulsory insurance contributions, valet fees, bank charges, racecourse physio and jock assoc (PJA) subs I banked £149.57.
I have tried without sucess to resign from the PJA, unless your in the top few your opinion is irrelavent and you are forced to toe the line. Weatherbys is without a doubt one of the most expensive banks, our yard apprentice was charged a fiver to have a cheque issued for £44!, and you have to have it.
If I had my time again I would more than likly go for no agent and no valet, the ammount of equipment, washing and drying gear you can buy with what you shell out I dread to think. Luckily for me I have a full time job so now any rides I get are a bonus.
Any pay rise is obviously welcome its just a case of not living beyond your means and been sensible with what you get.

wich bracket of jockeys are we talking about??
also it would depend on how many rides they get anualy.
+there personal circumstances..December 31, 2009 at 21:18 #266785I think they ( well, most of them
) deserve every penny they receive.I also think they are amongst the fittest people on the planet.

Really ?January 2, 2010 at 11:38 #267047badly underpaid i would think. just ask yourself, want to drive to wincanton on a bitterly cold day and sit on a novice chaser for peanuts, fall , get concussion and drive home, hopefully not feeling too bad . sod that for a laugh.
January 2, 2010 at 11:41 #267048Improve prize money and operate the French system – lower per-ride and higher cut of the prize money. Would also cut out the likely corruption if a jockey can make £1,000 from riding a winner rather than guarantee £500 from stopping one. Would mean the undesirables would need to place bigger bets and the patterns would become far more obvious than they currently are.
