December 5, 2008 at 14:34 #194526Dettori gets in the poll for what reason?
December 5, 2008 at 18:27 #194594I added him to the nominations Ian – I felt that his display in winning two Breeders Cup races entitled him to inclusion. He remains one of the world’s finest.
December 5, 2008 at 18:31 #194598Hayley Turner gets my vote, she has improved immensely this season.
December 6, 2008 at 01:37 #194707Recent events involving Sam Thomas shows how difficult it is to ride for a big stable and riding for ballydoyle it doesnt come much bigger than that- so murtagh gets my vote
December 6, 2008 at 05:25 #194791Hayley Turner.
Wins on Gee Dee Nen,Redford and The Betchworth Kid plus Group Races abroad has shown she is Class
December 6, 2008 at 05:32 #194795Johnny Murtagh’s personal problems have been no secret, and he has had to work mighty hard to exorcise his demons.
Getting the No.1 job at Ballydoyle is about as high pressure a situation as a jockey can be in – just ask Jamie Spencer. But from day 1 there was never any doubt Johnny was up to the task. A brilliantly stylish and graceful jockey at his best, Murtagh’s performances in the saddle were the perfect compliment to Ballydoyle’s near total equine domination during 2008.
I voted for JM, but as you say he has/had demons and I would be surprised if he’s there for the long haul.

December 8, 2008 at 17:14 #195411Buik is a top jockey in the making but don’t see as he did anything exceptional this term. Though not easy first year without a claim.
Dettori did have a good DAY at the Breeders Cup but this is for the YEAR.
Ryan won the jockeys championship but was helped by others not "going for it". Did have a Thomasesque few weeks mid season too.
Murtagh had exceptional results but would Fallon have done any less riding those horses? Still, almost gets my vote doing so well.
David Probert came from nothing, catching the eye with his style and ability. Fully deserves his place here. Would imagine Andrew Balding has a sack full of would be apprentices wanting to join his stable.
But my vote goes to Hayley, to be honest I thought there were better apprentices around but has improved all season. Hopefully she will get a chance in Group 1’s in this country now. Is as good as all but the very top few male jockeys.
