Just out of interest does anyone know if anyone has ever been recruited from a forum or from the internet to tip for the racing post or any other major organisation?

The Sportsman’s racing team would have been different – or might not have existed at all – without the existence of forums, including this one, for all that most on that team had extensive previous experience in analysis/journalism.

I’ll leave it to others to decide whether that was a good thing.

A must read, and very much understandable to take time to "smell the roses"

Without doubt Mr Willoughby’s finest work and an excellent example of why threads like this tend to miss the point from the start. I couldn’t help smiling at the following:

"And that’s when my work started to suffer. I had no energy to engage with the material. I tried harder and harder but my stuff became so bland that people began to understand it!"

Which probably also explains his approach to horse racing punditry – and why he was never very good at it.

    Thanks for that link Smithy

I’d no idea that James has had such a difficult time in recent years. Obviously his torment has much to do with the affliction affecting his son but there seems a deeper, inner turmoil too.

All the very best to you and your family James

Echoed: Thanks for that link, Smithy.

    Striking, heartfelt prose.

All the very best to you and your family, JW.

    A heart-wrenching piece indeed, Max.

Getting back to the focus of the thread, is it possible for anyone to be more monotonous, tedious, depressing and uninteresting than Graeme Rodway?

Zoso – The Racing Forum’s very own Adam Lee Brookes was recently recruited by Timeform.

Reading that Willoughby blog does put our collective, obsessive rantings and ravings on racing’s intricacies into stark perspective.

Best wishes to him and his family.

James is one of the few journalists on racing that I admire. I wish him and his family all the best

Very few people in racing impress me,the Tom Segal organisation know their stuff but as far as journalists go James Willoughby is in a class of his own, what most see as Black amd White,Win or Lose,James could take things to another dimension and was the king of provoking thought,in a field full of sheep he was the Black one! Muppet like comments as those from reet hard, who is himself the King of Hindsight,(Somersby)is best summed up in Rorys quote from James, straight over his head!
