Very sad news indeed and as others have said it underlines the risks jockeys take every day – it’s often said there are not many jobs where you are routinely followed round by a doctor and an ambulance.
I still remember that terrible day quite vividly and I also remember being told at the time he wasn’t even expected to survive the flight to hospital. It shows his strength, determination and fighting spirit that he survived for so long after that terrible accident.
I also remember the terrible atmosphere the following day, something I have never experienced on a racecourse before or since – nor would I ever want to experience again.
Thoughts are with his family, friends and weighing room colleagues past and present.
