Ian Bartlett confirmed as no 3 commentator for the National, do they really need 3?
Simon Holt has been called up for racecourse commentary at the Cheltenham festival and will be a possible for Aintree although Howes & Machin remain in pole position.
December 5, 2016 at 10:30 #1275791I imagine it’s the constant mention of certain bookmakers and their prices was the reason this thread got reported, as that could be seen as advertising.
But who knows.

December 5, 2016 at 21:54 #1275860itv tells print journalists to get lost.
Print journalists to be banished from shot when ITV takes over racing coverage from Channel 4
Traditionally print journalists can be seen hovering around a jockey during a post race interview but not anymore itv has said it doesn’t want them in the camera shot and putting microphones in the way.
December 5, 2016 at 22:39 #1275866Silly move by ITV p1ssing off other media on whom they’ll depend for positive spin of the job they’re doing
December 8, 2016 at 11:38 #1276043I have just finished Peter O’Sullevans autobiography a paragraph that caught my eye was from an article he wrote in September 1970 in which he was talking about ITV’s increased coverage of horse racing.
“By the end of the current year ITV will have arranged to screen 157 programmes compared with the BBC’s 83. Two years ago ITV covered 110 days.”
That is more than 3 days a week.
December 8, 2016 at 12:01 #1276045What on earth makes them think that the jockies, owners or trainers will then be willing to talk to ITV and then the press separately on the race course. As least with the status quo all of them get a chance to hear the connections at once. Ryan Moore will be truly delighted.
December 8, 2016 at 13:40 #1276051I don’t see the need for journalists to scrum round the people being interviewed when they would only be regurgitating what appears on screen anyway. Interviewees are addressing the person interviewing them, not a load of interlopers. An unedifying sight. Well done ITV
December 10, 2016 at 14:22 #1276533Mick Fitz is really a dreadful gravy-trainer.
Watching the back end of the morning line earlier, I noticed he had tipped up Vaniteaux in the 1.15 at Cheltenham, this being his charity bet.
Perhaps I was expecting him to turn back the habits of a lifetime and show some insight or intelligence, picking out a lively outsider at rewarding odds.
But no on inspection, it turned out to be another short-priced favourite.

I would agree with that. Unfortunately, most of what the jocks say isn’t worth the effort.

Because they’d have to watch the replay of the racing to get what the jockey said otherwise? Which requires more effort when you think about it? And they are paid to be there, so they need to look as if they are earning that wage.
Racing isn’t a particularly organised sport in that way and I guess in most other sports they have individual press conferences- jockeys/trainers being interviewed on racing telly is about as high-tech as it gets.
Personally I don’t see anything wrong with it, it might seem “undignified” but for me it adds to the rather chaotic nature of the sport, which in a way is part of it’s charm
Contrast that with the saccharine interviews you see on Match of the day etc- tend to bore everyone to tears. Hope racing never goes that way

I think the Aussies do it (not the press conference); get all of the jockeys for a quick interview after the race
As you know, the Breeders Cup have press conferences (not sure if they are immediately after each race) and even Royal Ascot does it

I think the short interview you mentioned is about the beaten jockeys. It seems common for Racing in Melbourne. HKJC also had similar interviews after those 4 Group 1s yesterday.

December 14, 2016 at 20:44 #1277202The no journos scrum in the parade ring during post race interviews was also introduced when the last Channel 4 contract began – it lasted a few months before it gradually went back to the old ways.
Undoubtedly the same thing will happen again this time – I’ll give it six months before the scrum re-appears.
Without the scrum and post race interviews the likes of Racing Posts Andrew King would be out of a job – – – – – – – -maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all.
December 27, 2016 at 16:12 #1278787Lovely little segment to finish things off there on Channel 4
December 27, 2016 at 21:22 #1278841Just a reminder that Racing UK is free on Saturday as no terrestrial horse racing.
December 28, 2016 at 10:52 #1278886Thanks for the heads up Steveh
