My take on Rwanda (which is surprisingly popular with all, voters (not me)) is that its a play to the membership but will quietly slip away under some of the candidates if they become leader
July 12, 2022 at 19:03 #1606693I didn’t say he was responsible for world events. But he does seem to have forgotten that he was responsible for the economy. As if it was another political party dealing with it all. For what it’s worth I think it was unfair that he was branded along side Johnson for breaking covid rules because I really can’t see him taking part in boozy do’s in Downing Street ( he doesn’t drink for a start!). He just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. His own party is turning on him more than I am. The more JRM and Dorries turn on him the more I’m prepared to forgive him for everything else. I do believe that eat out to help out resulted in more people catching covid, some of whom died. The Conservatives were happy enough to blame the Labour Party for what was a world banking crisis.
July 12, 2022 at 19:05 #1606694I agree about Rwanda. But it annoys me that they pretend that they’re doing it to protect people. And it’s costing a lot of money!
July 12, 2022 at 19:22 #1606700The Rwanda plan is running at over a million pounds per case.
No way that money could be better spent, Moe.
July 12, 2022 at 19:27 #1606701Yes. It’s a stupid scheme in every level
Good point. Noticed that the ridiculous jrm (Charlie hawtrey) is obsessed with sunak and for me that’s an endorsement
July 12, 2022 at 19:37 #1606703It’s one of the most disgusting things they’ve ever cooked up. It is inhumane and downright nasty. It doesn’t even work as they intended (and anyone who ever thought it would is an idiot).

Is it any wonder this government is going after the BBC?
July 14, 2022 at 14:16 #1606898The new issue of Private Eye has a disgusting but hilarious cover

July 14, 2022 at 17:03 #1606927Ian Hislop, a formerly sensible commentator, he has turned into a sour, sad little man. He clearly has a problem with how he inadvertently helped build the Johnson brand and help him into power. It goes a long way to explain his immature, vitriolic reaction.
He has been editor of the Eye for far too long. He needs to step down and go away somewhere to sort out his issues.
July 14, 2022 at 17:24 #1606932As previously stated, I’ve never been a Hislop fan.
Right from the dawn of HIGNFY (back in the days when it was initially moderately funny) he thought it his elitely intellectual role to explain what the week’s news really meant to the audience.
Odious, conceited, little tool – and that was my verdict in the years when I most liked him!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 14, 2022 at 18:13 #1606938I’d largely agree that it’s time Hislop stepped down from the Eye and certainly agree that HIGNFY has been on air for far too long: I haven’t watched it for years
However, did find the latest cover gruesomely amusing. Each to their own, again
July 14, 2022 at 19:29 #1606954I liked it
To be fair to hislop, private eye has always made a virtue of being unchanging in format. So long as it breaks stories, it’s doing its job and it has done too in fairnees
July 14, 2022 at 19:43 #1606958Thought it was a bit “Viz” myself.
I liked “Viz” back in the day, but it was very much of its time.
Private Eye needs fresh editorial direction.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 15, 2022 at 11:11 #1607023I admit to be somewhat biased as I’ve been a reader of Private Eye for nearly 50 years and it’s the only dead tree publication I still subscribe too. The arrival every fortnight is still met with an anticipatory smile
The investigative journalism is as good and necessary as it ever was, and the satire/lampooning the same curate’s egg as it ever was
Unaligned, all are fair game; though it has in recent times come in for some criticism – rightly so – for being harder on Brexiteers than Remainers: that schism cuts deeply
July 15, 2022 at 11:23 #1607024I stopped subscribing about three years ago and have not missed it at all. It was becoming a chore to read.
Agree there is still some good journalism but the satire is very lazy now. The old guard of Booker, Ingrams and Fantoni are not involved now due to death or retirement and have not been replaced. It just is not funny any more.
I think the tone of the magazine had been changing but Brexit tipped it over the edge.
The problem with the Eye is it has become middle aged and a part of the Establishment it affects to oppose. It needs a new editor to rediscover its anarchic spirit.

Needs to increase the size of the type face too!

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 15, 2022 at 19:46 #1607092Hmm
Ingrams hardly came across as the sort to stop and have a chat with an oik in the street. Comes across as a right elitist snob and only anti establishment in so far as he thinks he should be it
Had an obsession with certain characters too and many would say they had a certain something in common too
