The three from whom I would have next pm are

    Hunt
    Javid
    Sunak

    Not in that order

Not the time for an inexperienced outsider imo

The worst option out of the leading contenders would be truss.

Ben Wallace was 8/1 to be the next permanent Conservative leader last night.
    Now 11/4.

    Get on! ;-)

“I think he is aiming for something in the region of 300 to 310 seats and then hoping he can form a coalition with the revived Liberals. It is not implausible they could win something like 20 to 30 seats.

If this coalition came to pass, I think its first priority would be to try to introduce PR. That would almost certainly keep an anti-Conservative majority in permanent power.

The only flaw is any change to the electoral system would usually have to be approved by a referendum.”

This might well be the plan.

While Starmer might like the idea of a Blairesque landslide, he knows it isn’t going to happen and the idea of ending perpetual Tory rule forever by forming a coalition then changing the electoral voting system might well be something he believes in.

Mr Boring might yet end up with a far more memorable legacy than Johnson – if he can escape “Beergate!”

“I felt that I needed to curtsy before him.”

I am thankfully free of any such deferential impulses – and shocked you harbour any yourself!

I just like that he was his own man, didn’t court popularity, had a dry wit and stood up to Thatcher.

Ben Wallace clear favourite to be next PM on Betfair.

Puts me in mind of Kitty Muggeridge’s remark about David Frost: “He rose without trace.”

Next leader? Boils down to the Tory party membership doesnt it? They effectively chose Boris, whereas only c50% of MPs voted for Boris in 2019.

Ben Wallace? Steady pair of hands, has come to prominence since the Ruskies invaded Ukraine.
Maybe the country just needs a quiet, unassuming guy who’ll just get on with the job without necessarily being a character.
Let’s be quite blunt the London-centric media will try to do hatchet jobs on whoever makes it as leader, as i’m convinced ‘they’ want a govt who’ll get closer to Europe again. Just u wait and see.
The London centric media, esp mainstream TV, cant stand any govt Right of Centre.

Wallace has always topped the popularity polls amongst the Conservative Party membership, so if he makes it to the final two he will probably win. For that reason, I have backed him on Betfair.

His popularity with the membership is a bit curious because he is a Remainer. For that reason, the media and political establishment will support him as another step in the process to reverse Brexit. Senior Conservatives are already talking about rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union, which would render Brexit pointless.

I think the Liberals would be very disappointed if they could not muster at least 40 undeserved seats next time.

Wilts, does the London centric media include the Mail, Express, Sun and Telegraph who did so much to get this maniac elected?

Remember how much chaos they told us this country would be in if Corbyn was elected. How has that played out?

As the membership vote on the final two, they will choose the more populist and right wing of the pair, that’s activists for you, and Labour activists are no better.

But of course the most populist and right wing candidates might not make it that far.

Johnson was the one and only “popularist” leader, so to judge the Conservative membership on one election is strange. Johnson was chosen because he was the person to achieve Brexit.

Conservative membership will have in mind who is popular with the electorate and therefore who can win Conservatives the next general election. That is unlikely to be a right wing candidate.

Ben Wallace may even help on the Scottish issue.

Thanks Boris, for basically leaving ‘me’ (us) alone (re covid restrictions) and letting me (us) to get on with our lives.
The other ‘lot’, namely Labour, LDs, SNP certainly would’ve cuddled up to the public health bods, scientists and scuppered our freedoms during Winter and early Spring.
Now let’s have a True Free Market Conservative government and break free from covid and post-covid interventionist policies. Deliver on your elected mandate.
To the mainstream TV journos – Stop trying to over influence that hounds elected politicians out of office.

I don’t like him – and I don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth – but in itself that’s as good a speech as he’s ever made IMO.

Not sure they will let him stay on for long, though.

Didn’t notice too many people complaining about the medias campaign of misinformation and twisted stories about Jeremy Corbyn!

If betting on the next Conservative leader make sure you know the particular rules of the market you’re betting on. Whether it includes a caretaker leader or permanent leader.
