‘In 1974 the cut was partly reversed and the top rate on earned income was raised to 83%. With the investment income surcharge this raised the top rate on investment income to 98%, the highest permanent rate since the war. This applied to incomes over £20,000 (£213,08)’

thats not the point
Why would any entrepreneur bother to take any further risks if just about all their income goes to hmg?
And at that time especially, we needed job creators
February 4, 2022 at 00:25 #1581208Yes gamble. The economic genius that was Healey thought it a great idea to make any investment totally pointless
February 4, 2022 at 00:42 #1581212I think you mentioned 97% that extra one percent was important in that it meant that you were a third better off. Healey was a bit of a bully – he couldn’t handle people. I saw the impressive eyebrows rush across a street in Victoria. I was drinking tea in a cafe and often had a bacon sandwich with the delicious brown sauce. I noticed Healey was wearing a large colourful tie.

February 7, 2022 at 21:08 #1582035This I why Johnson is so dangerous. He knew what he was doing with that comment about Starmer. He should be made to apologise in parliament and admit that he lied. Sajid Javid said on breakfast tv that a line had been drawn under the comment but the events of this afternoon show that the seeds have only just been sown.
March 29, 2022 at 13:51 #1590217The Metropolitan Police force said Tuesday that they were fining 20 people over parties held by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his staff during coronavirus lockdowns, and that more people could face penalties.
But, they didn’t identify recipients of the fixed penalty notices, though Johnson’s office has said it will reveal if he gets one.
If he does get fined, should he immediately resign?
March 29, 2022 at 15:51 #1590241Johnson is mostly incompetent and a liar, but now is not the time for change. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody good, and the Ukraine war has obviously saved his position (much like Thatcher and the Falklands). But he comes across reasonably well on the international stage.

Labour and the Left tried to portray Johnson as being responsible for everything that happened in Number 10 / under his watch, Moe’. Even when Labour and the Left knew he actually did not know about at least some and possibly a lot of it. So although imo Johnson was wrong with the Saville comment, Labour’s vitriol could be seen as a bit double standards. .
Value Is EverythingMarch 30, 2022 at 00:21 #1590328So how do you feel about Johnson lying to parliament about the parties? Any other PM would have to resign over that.

Pull the other one, it’s got bells on it!I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysMarch 30, 2022 at 05:34 #1590344Starmer is not living up to my hopes and expectations. Too careful? too forensic, lack of conviction. Sadly I can’t see him taking the Tories down.
March 30, 2022 at 06:06 #1590346Agreed Colin, Labour need an old fashioned tub thumper.

Yes, I’ve said he should resign over what he said over parties if found to have knowingly broken the law or knowingly misled parliament. However, Starmer’s hero, Labour’s last PM lied to parliament and did not resign. Again double standards.
What do you think is more important Moe; lying about parties or lying in order to convince parliament to vote for us to go to war?
Value Is EverythingMarch 30, 2022 at 22:11 #1590431I think it’s more important to concentrate on the here and now.Mind you, Saddam Hussein was slaughtering his own people if I remember right. If we feel that Putin should be removed for what he’s doing shouldn’t we argue that Hussein should have been got rid of too?
