I have no doubt that this has been covered before , and I know that racing needs sponsorship , but isn’t it sad that tomorrow a race to remember a great trainer in Fulke Walwyn , is now preceded by the name Ladbrokes Daily Odds Boost. Not picking on that particular firm , just the overall principle.
Would we need to go down this avenue , if we had a state run pari mutuel system , and therefore less handicap , racing that is available to “manipulation” ?

Can’t see a problem with it myself – but I’m not one to nitpick like you guys who regularly post on this main section of the forum.

It’s the measure of our times. Fulke who died 30 years ago would be far less surprised by the word boost before his memorial race title than the shock he experienced when Arkle best his treasured Mill House – a horse he considered unbeatable.

‘Bested’ a word I first heard used by Bert on the Betfair forum twenty years ago.

I’ve certainly served my time on the various forums (or fora, used as a plural for forum by said Bert) Time to quit or take the reins

I used to be in the nostalgia camp.

I used to lament the passing of races with names like Mackeson (though I never drank it), Hennessy (ditto) and Whitbread (ditto).

But “tradition” simply means what racing was like when we first got into it, and “nostalgia” simply means remembering what racing was like when we first got into it.

    Times change.

The name Fulke Walwyn means about as much to most 21st century racing fans as a 19th century trainer would have done to most 20th century racing fans.

Living in the past simply reduces the number of people who can relate to your views.

It’s 2021, Ladbrokes are sponsoring this meeting, it’s the Ladbroke Trophy tomorrow, let’s live in the here and now.

As for a Tote monopoly – I would hate that and preserving precious fixed odds betting makes prize money levels, handicaps and all the concomitant shenanigans well worth it to me.

Bested would have been the preferred word but I meant to write beat and wrote best.

All the little nick nacks from the past must be put away in the sock drawer – not locked 🔒 though – and every time you change your socks you might like to see Henry Rix tipping the red or the blue ones or your thermals or the many mismatched odd socks usually black in colour at the bottom of the handicap draw. He has twittered on and flown his old nest to sit in the sock drawer and so must we.(move on)

Forget Mill House you can watch the remains of the beast transformed on Grand Designs. Nothing gets lost in the universe – it just changes shape and form.

Mackeson it used to do you good but today you can get a lot more energy out of a boost bar.

A tote monopoly would see the clever ones move into exotics but take out is the big decider – you are at their mercy. The old method still clanks along with Big blue holding the zimmer.

There is only one Ian Davies seems to get things uncannily right these days. Meshy called him a God but his awful odds as fractions choice contra decimals for his little green giant cast him down to Purgatory for several years in my eyes, and of course his potential pension pot suffered a hit. He’s in the upper firmament once more but being closely watched for slip ups.

Brown trilbys, sheepskin coats, cigarettes, binoculars draped over the left wrist – the world has moved on and even racing has left this look behind.

I took this picture at Warwick sometime in the early 80’s.

“Meshy called him a God” – she was very enlightened (or very sarcastic!), that young lady.

I had a “Decimal View” btw, gamble, and recall you making the point that decimal displayed odds include the stake, whereas fractional odds, of course, do not.

Anyway, I’m gratified to be considered “in the upper firmament once more,” though in reality I never once budged from the apex of Mount Olympus.

And I accept “being closely watched for slip ups” as just one of the many inevitable occupational hazards of deity.

It goes with the supernatural territory.

I think the name Fulke needs greater exposure. I think it could take off given more general awareness of it. I’m aware only of Mr Johnson Houghton other than Walwyn.

We definitely need more little Fulkes running around the council estates of Great Britain.

Stupid name Fluke but not as bad as naming your child after a tragic medical condition caused by a drug

    Gosden should be ashamed
of himself calling his kid thady

Its hard enough for him coping with 6 inch arms. Especially when asked to ride out

I was to see that Fulke Walwyn is been replaced too. We do need some sense of history.

There are people called Fulke. It is an old English name derived from Germany.
Thady is a name too and is a diminutive of Thaddeus. Thady is increasing in popularity, I suspect Thady Gosden is actually called Thaddeus.

We still have the Fred Archer Stakes at Newmarket – and quite right too.

But I doubt the name means much to many.

    Time moves on, memories fade.

Tis the never ending circle of life.

Fulke Johnson-Houghton is Fulke Walwyn’s nephew; hence the unlikely simultaneous appearance of a rare name
