Libertarian for me – O’Brien’s horses are very hit and miss at present.
June 29, 2013 at 17:34 #444357yep theres the answer
June 29, 2013 at 17:50 #444364Well, young Joseph O’Brien did indeed get into a pickle after all. Who’d have thunk it ?

For me, that was as poor as it gets. A ride right up with the one he gave Magician at Royal Ascot.
Ruler Of The World may not have won had Ryan Moore been aboard, but by God, he’d at least have given the horse a sporting chance of winning.
If the Coolmore millionaires don’t have a quiet word in Aidan’s ear – and very soon – then I’m afraid to say that their expensive equine stars will lose many more big races than they win – that is, if Joseph O’Brien is aboard any of them. Tactically inept doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Rant over ! Sorry, but it was truly pitiful to watch.

June 29, 2013 at 18:03 #444365To be fair to Joseph O’Brien, Festive Cheer was even further off the pace than Ruler Of The World, came under pressure at the same time, encounted more traffic and still got closer than the odds-on favourite. Ruler Of The World would not have won with anybody aboard. Festive Cheer may have done, though!
I have to agree that both rides were very poorly-judged even so. You could see the exact moment turning into the straight where both Ballydoyle jockeys hit the panic buttons and realised that they had ballsed it up.
June 29, 2013 at 18:29 #444372Young Joseph – who I think is talented but raw – gave Ruler of the World far too much to do. But he appeared to have him in the right position with two furlongs to go. There just wasn’t any gas left by then.
He should have been up with the pace a lot earlier. Never understand why jockeys give leaders 20 lengths and expect them to fall away. What’s wrong with keeping them within 5-10 lengths, then making your move?
I think Joseph became his dad’s main jockey far too early. He needed to be No2 for a year or two and learn from more experienced race tacticians.
June 29, 2013 at 18:38 #444373It’s my fault. I backed festive cheer at Epsom and the godolphin today. Didn’t take much notice of ruler if the world but it sounds like he was gaining rapidly??

June 29, 2013 at 19:42 #444384Ruler Of The World was no more than 4L behind Trading Leather turning in, and about 2L behind Galileo Rock.
Ruler Of The World was beaten around 10L by Trading Leather at the finish, and about 8L by Galileo Rock.
Here’s my analysis: Ruler Of The World wasn’t good enough on the day. Galileo Rock is improving with every race. Trading Leather improved for yet another step up in trip and is a very good colt.
No excuses. The best colt won.

Good judges agree with Bosranic!
June 29, 2013 at 20:03 #444386Just watched the race again all i can say it was jockey error ill say it again IMO Ruler of the World is a lazy horse J P O’Brien didn’t even flinch on him until the 4f pole look at the Epsom Derby race and watch
ryan moore
. his keeping him awake.

Only time will tell tho i hope they meet again

Its quite exciting times ahead tho with all these good 3yo
Colts
around.

not to mention
Telescope
still cant wait for him to return!!!
June 29, 2013 at 20:30 #444395I don’t suppose it will happen, but I’d love to see Ruler of the World go for the Eclipse.
I’d love to see RoTW, fully recovered from his Curragh exertions, lay up with the pace at Sandown and push on, 2f out.
I hope RofTW’s defeat doesn’t result in anti J. O’Brien posters slagging him off. I doubt if the difference between the average jockey and the very best averages out at 2l or more. Yep- I know that’s the difference between losing and winning a lot of races. but not today it wasn’t.
Dclaration of War’s victory at Royal Ascot met with little praise for J. O’Brien, yet if it had been Fallon or Moore riding, would have drew many comments of the sort that suggested only riders of such proven experience could have won on him.
What’s the perceived superiority between an experienced, high-class jockey (Fallon, Dettori etc.) and an average jock (j.O’Brien etc.) 1l, 2l, 3l? I don’t think it’s any great distance. Perhaps worthy of a separate post.
I’d go so far as to say the form of today’s Irish Derby isn’t worth two-fifth’s of f.all. And there are plenty of other GP1 races where this is the case.
I’ll try and get to Sandown if RofW runs and just hope that they’ll give him a positive ride from the word go. I’ve got this sneaking suspicion that, despite his Chester Vase and Derby win, he’s really best over 10f at a strong pace.June 29, 2013 at 20:38 #444398Ruler Of The World was no more than 4L behind Trading Leather turning in, and about 2L behind Galileo Rock.

Best horse on the day anyway…I am not sure the second has improved much and the third is group 2 at best

June 29, 2013 at 23:44 #444423Could it be that the placed horses at Epsom are not as stout stayers as was initially thought ? Quick race today and yet both ROTW and Lib’ian were well beaten and struggling from some way out.
June 30, 2013 at 09:17 #444442Poor Epsom Derby , form is in tatters
Improving 3 yr old colt won Irish derby fair and square , hard to see any of the Epsom mob beating him at any time soon
Joseph does give his horses a lot to do , but I dont honestly think it made any difference last night
Best horse won
IMO

June 30, 2013 at 10:08 #444446Thing is, giving them too much to do can also be a fault of Moore’s. Rides his winners but is often on the best horse.
June 30, 2013 at 10:24 #444448I marked Ruler of the World down as a leger type after debut. thought after Derby perhaps I was wrong but after yesterdays race I think I was right. The horse hadn’t the speed to come from the back of the field, ok he made up ground before the turn in but must of half emptied the petrol gauge in doing so, maybe the drawn made up team O’Brien’s mind to drop him out the back. Trading Leather got the perfect spot and won very well, TAPK must be pulling his hair that Jim left him out of Epsom. Even Toronado would of won the English Derby……

Charles Darwin to conquer the World
June 30, 2013 at 20:22 #444503Ruler Of The World was very sweaty between his back legs before the race and the commentary team put that forward as a negative when assessing them near the off. The O’Brien camp are now saying they perhaps should have spotted that the horse had done a bit too much in a short space of time and a break would have been better for him looking retrospectively. The plan now is a wee holiday and they think they will drop him in trip as well, which might surprise some but not everyone.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
