Charlie Brooks has a colourful explanation for racehorse injuries in today’s Telegraph:
"…Some modern-day lad or lass from the Eastern Bloc, who is probably peddling a bit of dope in his or her spare time wouldn’t be able to ride one side of Badsworth Boy in a three-mile steady canter."
"…Take Royal Ascot at York this year. Probably the worst ground that any major race meeting has been run on this century, including in India."

Graphic comments by Johnny Murtagh about constant wasting which “drives you that insane you could do something stupidâ€ÂÂ
February 2, 2006 at 16:17 #68109"Can anyone explain why developing two-year olds should carry more ?"
The point Murtagh makes about maiden 2-y-o races is a valid one. As 2-y-os carrying a penalty in non-maiden races will often be carrying 9 stone or even more, why not have the standard weight in a maiden race at around 9 stone?
Just because a 2-y-o hasn’t won a race doesn’t mean that he can’t carry 9 stone in a maiden just as well as his winning, penalised stablemate in a novice stakes.
And, anyway, they’ll be carrying more than that at home.

February 2, 2006 at 16:46 #68110Agree with Murtagh. People are getting heavier and why should their health be endangered though tough on specialist lightweights. Irish research indicated that most jocks are in charge of a thoroughbred in races whilst badly dehydrated. What about maiden auction races? weight depends on price paid and some of the lower weights are ridiculously light. What is the weight range in these races?

February 21, 2006 at 13:03 #68120Polytrack proves heavy going for punters
Results show it really is harder to find a winner on the all-weather surface so popular with racecourses
"Speaking on behalf of punters, author and journalist "Nick Mordin claims that the surface has reduced betting "to the level of a lottery, almost."

February 21, 2006 at 15:46 #68121Hi Zilzal. Apologies for stepping on your turf so to speak but I thought this was an interesting article. No abandonments for frost here methinks!
February 21, 2006 at 18:44 #68122Step on it anytime, David ;)
There were several good pieces today including also Chris McGrath’s interview with "Manton Meehan" in the Independent and Charlie Brooks on covering racecourses against frost in the Telegraph.
