I would prefer the BBC to have no racing coverage at all; is there an option for that?
I’m confused as to why racing enthusiasts want more of such a shoddy product, which is both condescending and insulting to anyone who knows the first thing about horse racing. No other sports enthusiast suffers this.
I would sign a petition for the movement of all BBC racing fixtures to Channel 4.
Two reasons:-
a) the BBC is the national public service broadcaster
and
b) competition is healthy. If C4 had a monopoly then standards could potentially drop even lower. Also with competition racing can potentially get a better deal.
I also think you are possibly missing the point about the BBC coverage. Racing enthusiasts will most likely watch their racing on the specialist channels. It is the BBC’s non-technical, for want of a better phrase, approach that is needed to try and hook new followers to the sport.
How many of us were first attracted to the sport by terrestial TV coverage – I suggest the majority. I would also suggest for many the first seeds were sown from the BBC’s coverage of the Grand National.

You could say the same about test cricket or football through Match of the Day, doesn’t mean it has to last forever. One of the problems with the BBC’s coverage for me has been aiming at non racing followers, I don’t know any non racing people who would watch racing however it’s presented. It should be aimed at people who actually want to watch the sport imo. Is it any co-incidence that their viewing figures have apparently been low? In the digital age, terrestrial, non terrestrial will be irrelevant, channels will just be a number on a box.
I would like to see the whole thing opened up, how much are the BBC paying to show the Grand National? Is it enough? They could be getting it on the cheap for all we know. Should we have a bidding war for the race with a proviso that other racing is shown throughout the year?
What about getting Sky Sports involved, maybe they’d like to get their hands on the National, Royal Ascot & Derby and be prepared to show plenty of other racing throughout the year. No reason the crown jewels couldn’t be FTA while other racing could be on their sports channels as they have done with some of their Greyhound Derby coverage.January 8, 2009 at 19:19 #202539well over 700 now signed
January 8, 2009 at 19:25 #202541According to the RP, 1.1 million watched the Welsh Grand National on the BBC the other day.
They were all confirmed racing fans? Where do they go on Saturday afternoons when C4 racing is on?
January 8, 2009 at 20:12 #202550If HMS BBC RACING were a sinking ship in the sea of monopoly, and i was just sailing along on moonlight bay, form book in one hand, I hear Captain C Balding, shouting "she"s going down!" "Man over board" turns out to be 1st Semen Willie! i throw him my rubber ring but he just keeps slipping through it! The twins are next to jump Ray Cochrane and James Sherwood but they make it to shore safely, surfing on each others noses in the air! "Barty" isn"t all at sea for long getting picked up by the Lifeboat
Racing UK, Poor Angus Loughran alledgedly went down with the ship, but was later found advertising toothpaste in Mongolia! Thankfully Richard Pitman never turned up for the voyage! Not for the 1st time by all accounts,Willies shrieking saved his life, a seahorse called "Sun Princess"
let him ride her back to shore! pity he couldn"t ride her like that in the King
George! A colourful Mermaid called Big Mac saved Captain C and promised her a job at C4 racing, where she"s been ever since! God Bless
BBC racing it just never moved with the times!January 8, 2009 at 21:04 #202559Job done.

January 8, 2009 at 21:21 #202564I don’t like the BBC coverage, but without them fewer people would become interested in racing. You only have to see the different viewing figures for the BBC and Channel 4. Racing is already seen by the general public as a sport for the posh twit and compulsive (poor) gambler.
You may think it does not matter if the BBC do not show racing. But less racing on BBC will probably mean less sponsership. Probably less revenue too, which could lead to British Racing being unable to attract the best horses. So the quality of racing deteriorates.Mark

January 13, 2009 at 03:44 #203566Currently, the total stands at 1,821 signatures.
Does anyone agree with me that this is a rather pathetic response which will give the BBC every right to say "I told you so"?
January 13, 2009 at 04:03 #203571Depends how much publicity the petition has had yet. It has some time to go before it’s end.
I’ve been on my sick bed all year so far. Has the Racing Post, ATR, RUK, C4 Racing, publicised it?
