Arguably off topic, but I remember the days when ‘contribute’ was pronounced by most media folk with the emphasis on the second syllable. Then came the miner’s strike when Arthur Scargill’s voice was heard 10 times a day. He pronounced ‘contribute’ with the emphasis on the first syllable (a regional thing, I believe). Since then, it has worked its way into the favoured pronunciation UK wide.

At least I get to mention Arthur on TRF (though I suspect he’s reared his majestic comb-over before).

While I’m on the subject (I promise to stop after this one), how come vulnerable has lost its first L for most media folk?

Don’t get me started on the appalling efforts to pronounce French names by all British racing commentators. They make my ears bleed.

    What’s in a name…

The classic for me for pronunciation, was back in the 70’s when I was getting the football scores from the BBC tele printer, when up popped the team name

    Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyllllantysiliogogogoch

you heard a voice say "I’m not going to even attempt it" with laughter in the background, he just said

    gogogoch

To be fair that name should be illegal. I mean HOW, just HOW? :|

Can’t say I was enthused by the resurrection of this thread by Drummer Boy but it has some interesting additions and pleased he confirmed that "Hommidge" is correct for this horse.

Surprised Hunty got it wrong at Windsor but then again he damaged my ears pronouncing Aachen "Arshen" throughout a hurdle race a while ago.

Has Simon Holt really never come across Scafell Pike throughout his life?

Has Malcolm Tomlinson an experienced actor never heard of Arkansas?

Interesting to read about "team meetings" for pronunciation in Paul Ostermeyer’s post. Obviously Ian Bartlett doesn’t go in for that sort of stuff with frequent errors and the most high profile one of Moviesta. He mustn’t watch much racing if he’s not commentating on it.
