How long has this been going on? I know its been going on a long while with football but haven’t noticed it in horse racing till recently and it’s not on every horse.
Are they allowed to do it despite advertising the bigger price in the press and online? Surely they should mention that these prices may not be available in betting shops. May even be a case for the ASA.
Has anyone else noticed this occurring?

Yes, I have noticed it with Hills. The extra places they offer online are not available in the shops either.

I am not sure if anything can be done. Presumably there is something in the small print that covers it.

I haven’t seen the adverts but almost certainly they’ll have added a small note at the bottom of the ad to say shop prices may differ or similar. When I worked in a shop years ago (not Hills) as online was really taking off this was going on. If it wasn’t legal I’m sure something would have been done by now.

From their retail ‘Fair Deal’ rules:

    a. William Hill prices are offered on horse racing until the off of each race. Prices offered online or on the self-service terminal may differ from those offered over the counter.

Paddypower do the same thing, I had no idea it happened either til I walked in to a paddypower shop a year ago and tried to put a bet on some random horse, when I asked the price they quoted me a shorter one than I’d seen online 5 minutes earlier, I asked if the price had shortened and the guy behind the till said the online odds are often different to those in the shop.

I’m not sure what the big deal is tbh.

Betting shops are a bricks and mortar business with higher operating costs.

    The odds offered reflect that.

On the internet, costs are lower so they can afford to operate to tighter margins.

Yeats. Oddschecker includes a lot of bookies. Don’t know about Hills but 365 does a top price guarantee and it only includes certain firms, generally the large, established ones.

Ian. There are other advantages to the firm of online punting, they can monitor everyone, not just the high staking customers and also get rid of the ‘unprofitable’ ones sooner. Also no slow counters and ambiguous bets.

“they can monitor everyone, not just the high staking customers and also get rid of the ‘unprofitable’ ones sooner.”

    Don’t I know it?!

I’ve been restricted by about a dozen firms online – you don’t get those enhanced terms for long if you have more than half a clue what you’re doing!

Worse odds in shops is the price of anonymity.

“Also no slow counters and ambiguous bets.”

I know the latter is infuriating to betting shop staff. How difficult is it to write out a betting ticket? Stake, horse name, time and venue.

Obviously it is difficult for some of the characters you send hanging around in the shops all day. You have to wonder if some of them are literate.

Yes Cork, ambiguous bets take two forms. Those from people with the IQ of a potato and deliberate scams. I agree the ones from thick people were far worse being both more common and placed by people who came in all the time.

We had a gallery of the scam ones to look out for. An example being that they’d bet on a dog race last second and write it in such a way that that they could claim just about any forecast that was possible.

Ian, they can and do monitor people in shop if they bet over certain trigger points but it relies on staff manually assigning a bet to that customer’s profile so it’s never going to be fully accurate and it’s restricted to activity in the individual shop of course. I can remember one guy we were made to get rid of as a result, lovely chap he was too. Was a real shame.

It’s called misleading advertising Ian, if they don’t want to lay the odds in the shops then don’t state that they are in the advert.
It’s quite likely they are under the odds on most races but 99% of race odds aren’t advertised in the paper as being guaranteed and available in the shops as well as online. It was only by off chance that I noticed it yesterday and they did the same trick today in the Yorkshire Oaks. At least 3 of the horses were under odds. Tuesday, Lilac Road and Raclette.

I will let you know Ian if the ASA agree with you and Hills ;-)

My guess is that Hills have sufficient enough get out clauses to keep the ASA off their backs. Although without seeing the advert it’s hard to tell.

They probably mean that they will match other online prices online and match other shop prices in shop. Whether that is communicated clearly enough is for the ASA to decide.

Yes me too, do please report back.

If they are being misleading then they deserve to be called out. My instinct makes Hills odds on though, but it’s hard to price up not having seen it.

Hills are down a shop in my town
Incredible really as the amount of people that feed all their money into the FOTBs you’d think they would be rolling in it..🤑🤑🤑
