ISnt she riding with great coinfidence at the moment. Surely has too be the best british female rider ever, would you agree?.
Also very noticible that in last few weeks has been riding for the top trainers, and indeed the top arab trainers.
Can definately hold her own against the boys IMHO.September 20, 2008 at 18:43 #181749Great to see, isn’t it,
Colin
September 20, 2008 at 19:16 #181756I think she’s superb. If I were a major owner or trainer I’d have no hesitation putting her on my top horses. There are many, many male jockeys I could name that aren’t in Hayley’s league.
She deserves to be the first female jockey to really break into the big time IMO.
September 20, 2008 at 19:37 #181760A 9% strike rate puts her on a par with the likes of Steve Drowne, Jimmy Quinn, Fergus Sweeney and Daragh O’Donoghue. Was it not for the fact that she has a pair of breasts, she’d attract little attention.

But then the type of horses she’s had to ride …………
I look for reliability in a jockey. When I see a horse that I think should win I expect it to be given the type of ride I expect in relation to its previous. From my experience Hayley does this better than most. There’s nothing worse than backing a horse that is usually prominant and some idiot decides to hold it up (often Jamie Spencer) and it gets beaten in a race that it shouldn’t.
Admittedly I’m speaking through my pocket here but Hayley is a jockey I trust along with Johnny Murtagh and Philip Robinson to name two.

What does that prove David?
Just quoting stats like that takes no account of the quality of horse she may be riding.
Also over what timescale is the 9% – this season or all time.
Blithly quoting stats without any use of context proves nothing either way.
FWIW I think she is a capable jockey and I believe it depends what type of horse she is riding.
In a strong physical finish she cannot compete with the stronger men.
However on a more "sensitive" horse which responds to a more gentle handling she is probably an asset.
September 20, 2008 at 19:59 #181768This season’s S/R. I wouldn’t say she gets a worse book of rides than any of the riders I mentioned, none of whom you would consider to ever be a particularly positive jockey booking. And what does quality of horse that she’s riding have to do with anything? It matters little if she’s riding 100 horses all the time if they are running off 105.
I agree with you that she’s capable, but no more so than about 35/40 of the jockeys riding in the country today. I disagree that she is particularly suited to horses that respond more to ‘gentle handling’, she’s more than capable of belting one home when its needed.
September 21, 2008 at 08:34 #181811The present bout of Hayley hype reminds me of the similar hype directed towards William Buick this time last year when we all knew Liam Jones was really the better apprentice, this season has proved that.
The superb Kirsty M has no peers amongst the girls, shes better than 90% of the boys as well.
September 21, 2008 at 09:29 #181813as a punter it’s not the tits i look for it’s the return to a pound level stake and i noticed the other day there’s about 500 quid difference in HT and KM over the last two years. from a punting perspective some jockeys i’ve found are worth following less than others
September 21, 2008 at 13:07 #181835I have been very impressed with Hayley Turner. She seems to have a knack of keeping the horses she rides beautifully balanced and is good judge of pace and moreover, seldom panics. Her ride on Talk of Saafend the other day was particularly pleasing on the eye.
I do hope she wins on the same horse today at Hamilton.

I thought the ride she gave Talk Of Saafend was superb. OK the horse was odds on favourite and expected to win but jockeys often (IMO) seem to struggle mentally with that type of situation whereas Hayley did exactly the right thing. She didn’t panic or give the horse too much to do or try to go too soon she had the horse perfectly positioned from the off, remained extremely cool, kept the ride uncomplicated and delivered the horse at exactly the right time. A ride like that looks easy but so often you see jockeys overcomplicate and make a mess of it.
September 21, 2008 at 13:58 #181842Went to Newmarket yesterday and watched her ride a double; one ride beating a horse of mine which I travelled down to back.
She’s improved in leaps and bounds this season and her ride on Oat Cuisine yesterday was testament to that. She’s riding a lot lower in the saddle and seems to have developed the upper body strength necessary to drive a horse forward without affecting the natural stride pattern.
Hayley can get serious with a horse, but prefers not to and as such, she’s become a decent judge of pace and race position, and as Ian and Himself have pointed out, she doesn’t flap or panic in a tight situation. I like her (and that’s not always been the case).
Some readers may not have seen Marcus Tregoning interviewed on Friday afternoon after Hayley had just ridden the stable’s Derby hopeful Taamer to victory at Newbury. He placed her firmly and unequivocally in the country’s top ten jockeys and pledged to use her whenever possible. That’s good enough for me.
September 21, 2008 at 15:28 #181846As much as DJ’s being a bit cynical IMO, my sentiments are along the same lines as his. She’s a good rider, but if she wasn’t a girl would get much less kudos. Kirsty Milczarek is a more interesting long-term prospect IMO.

Yep superb again, she must give that horse a lot of confidence. Great ride.
September 21, 2008 at 20:30 #181876We have certainly got a good strong group of girls at the moment.
Hayley and Kirsty are the main girls at the moment.
Kelly Harrison,Amy Scott,Stacy Renwick and Cathy Gannon are also getting good rides and getting on the scoresheet aswell.
By and large this is the best we have had and even if you take away the physical attractiveness of whichever girl jock you fancy, you cannot deny that they are riding as good as anybody else this term.

Calmness and poise personnified – a terrific ride.
As regards the filly, I notice Peter Monteith forked out the £25,000 to claim her afterwards. I presume he’s doing this with novice hurdling in mind at some point, which could potentially see her united with another pretty bright (though at this stage still far less experienced) riding prospect in Ryan Mania.
