Haydock stages a 5 race card on Friday evening .
OK , that’s not strictly true because there is also an amateur jockeys’race but I don’t think such races should count towards the minimum 6 races stipulated by the rules but should be the 7th race at any meeting .

Who , apart from the joskeys and connections, is interested in the outcome ?

Any punter who knows their amateur jockeys?

The gap between the best and worst is significant among the amateur ranks and punters who make a study of this can obtain a real edge.

For off course punters maybe but not for people paying to enter the meeting . As I said it should be the seventh ( and last ) race on the card .

Would the same principle apply over Jumps, including regarding long-established races like the Kim Muir and the NH Chase at the Cheltenham Festival?

I think both are part of seven-race cards at present, so it’s immaterial, but that might not always be the case.

Until recently, when jockeys could ride at more than one meeting, amateur rider events were often the first race on the card at evening meetings to give the other jockeys more time to get to the track.

Does anyone know how much entry is at Haydock tonight? Looked on the website but was unable to find it on the maze of a site. It’s as if they don’t want you to know before you go.

It is certain to be very expensive. Haydock makes its money from the Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons in the summer.

A lot of the crowd will be putting away so much lager or prosecco that I doubt they will notice one of the races is for amateurs. Friday evening meetings nowadays are not aimed at racing fans but at the party crowd instead.

I know its not to do with tonights card but how bad is the John Of Gaunt tomorrow? I thought this was normally a half decent race but you’ve got 6 runners, half of them will never get a better chance of winning a Group race. 6 for the Pinnacle too, at least that looks competitive. Is it proximity to Royal Ascot or do trainers/owners not trust the COC with his watering?

Tellwright is retiring soon but I expect the watering policy will continue.

“I don’t think such races should count towards the minimum 6 races”

Nor do I. I hate it. And, yes, that includes the Foxhunters, Kim Muir etc. Not denying that some amateurs are as good as some professionals. Some kids at a local gymkhana are as good as some professionals but I wouldn’t expect to pay racecourse prices to watch them. If I had my way, all these novelty races would be on one day at Cheltenham and would be dealt with in the same way as Arab races are all other meetings – that is, separate from the real card and not included in placepot etc, albeit Arab races are a lot more interesting than amateur rider races. As long as racing is run as a vehicle for hobbyists rather than professional sport and entertainment industry it will continue though. Only a matter of time before we get the pony races as part of an official card at this rate. Might as well include football mascot races too and have done with any pretence of professionalism.

Get Your Tickets (from just £50) Now for racing at Chezzaster where it’s a cracking card run in honour of Tonge….

    2.00: Pony Race 138cm or under 6f

    2.35: Mascot Race 2f

Big Race Of The Day – the Tonge Plate
    3.10: Amateur Riders’ Handicap (Class 6) 1m2f

    3.45: Pony Race 139cm plus 1m

Four-race card as the picnickers start drifting away after the fourth anyway.

    Assume I’m sponsoring this…

Serious point though. If they at least put the rubbish on later on the card, it would stagger leave times and reduce congestion on the roads and rail.
