MorganH, I was not referring to Kris Kris as my personal opinion on the best Derby winner from the last 4 runnings not being a Ballydoyle horse. In response to your Istabraq point I would ceratinly say yes to Istabraq being a hyped up horse though, but he certainly lived up to the billing for the most part of his racing career luckily.
It may well be lazy journalists helping the hype band wagon roll on but they have to write something as a days racing rarely creates any grabbing headlines so most things are blown out of all proportion just to fill space. O’Brien has one of the top jobs in racing but many people expect his horses to be unbeatable (including many here) and any expectations mentioned to the press will be exagerated fro sure, and lets be honest he knows this! It’s in his interest to promote Coolmore by letting the press build up one of his horses profiles to increase stud values considerably if the horse can live up to the star billing, but there has to be a down side as the Hawk Wing topics have shown. Despite the fact I think HW has had brilliant career so far, it pains me to know he’ll be remembered more for his failures than his sucesses due to unfair expectations set by connections, journalists and punters alike.
Just seems a shame people are blinded by hype rather than how much ability a horse has.
June 24, 2003 at 19:40 #91554Swings and roundabouts? come on lads we’ve all had our say, is there any chance we can lay this thread to rest?
:bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore::bore:
June 24, 2003 at 19:58 #91556True Ian but even when you try and ignore threads you hate they just stand out a mile, i.e "Needleman Awards 2003".
I don’t know whether it was binned but if it hasn’t no one should ever bring it up again!
June 24, 2003 at 20:02 #91558Tries to think of a way to tell Ian to post less and do something else with his time but thinks he’s wasting his own time doing this
It’s best not trying to be clever ;)
I’ve read so much crap about Hawk Wing that I’m starting to get sick of the site of the name.
June 24, 2003 at 20:13 #91561Ian,
As the last Hawk Wing fan i’ll switch the light off or punch out your lights which ever it was
somehow this won’t be the last post
June 24, 2003 at 21:37 #91562It’s this switching off the lights business that’s really getting me in! Will you promise to switch the lights on again, if HW wins his next race in style, Ian?
June 24, 2003 at 21:46 #91563Still love him and surely not alone?
June 24, 2003 at 21:58 #91567Jim, I’m sorry but this makes me really angry. If you don’t like thread, then don’t read it. It is as simple as that.
When you’re a moderator of the forum, you can lock the thread. Around the same time, perhaps hell will have frozen over, and I will have backed one of your tips.
June 24, 2003 at 22:04 #91570RichK, who rattled your cage?…….I didn’t say I didn’t like the thread I said I’m bored with it, it’s simply past it’s sell by date.
AND don’t go mouthing off about my tips (I like to call them selections) as It’s neither here nor there what anyone does with my selections, I’m happy with them and that’s all that matters.
Also if I was a moderator of this part of the forum it would’ve been locked ages ago! (lucky I’m not eh?) ;)
June 24, 2003 at 22:16 #91572You did. Was that not obvious from my post?
Mouthing off? Tsh and pish. They’re very good selections, I’m sure. I bet you show a much better profit than I. I’d never back them, that’s all I said, did I not?
June 24, 2003 at 22:19 #91574Rich, who cares? lets try and be adult here eh? no more school ground behaviour, the thread is dead and that’s that!
June 24, 2003 at 22:23 #91577If the thread is dead, then stop posting on it.
The thread is not dead, because at just 9.30 this morning, the owner of the forum posted what I thought was an interesting post. So it keeps going.
I really object to self appointed moderators telling people when and when not to post.
June 24, 2003 at 22:41 #91580I object
what time is playtime?
June 24, 2003 at 22:49 #91582Good. Normal service resumed.
(Unfortuntely I appear to have killed the thread anyway! Would somebody please post something about Hawk Wing below??) :)

June 25, 2003 at 07:45 #91586That’s it, you’ve asked for it….
I’m keeping this thread going until Hawk Wing finishes his stud career!!!
or until Alex McLeish dyes that ginger tuft;)
or backandlay appears  whichever is the latest!!
RichK……i think Jim backed Dubai Destination :o
June 25, 2003 at 07:58 #91587I think that one horse that was blown out of proportion to his actual ability was Galileo and was symptomatic of one horse that the coolmore breeding interest actually effecting the racing ability of the horse. O’Brien talked him up as having the speed to be a miler and thought about running him in the QE2 after winning the KG. I think O’brien actually believed this. He went for the irish champion and was beaten by one of teh best older 10f horses we have seen in recent years. However, teh brillinat galileo that won the derby and KG are forgotten about. He will rarely get mentioned in O’briens best horses, unless he comes back into the limelight as a super stallion.
As dL stated HW could go the same way. Both horses were/are from teh top drawer and produced some briallint performances. How quickly the hype fades. HIgh Chapparal did very little wrong as a derby winner, adn one could question if the decision to run him in the arc as wise.
Jim, seriously, why post, leave teh thread end when no one wants to post. If HW wasnt being talked about, this place would be pretty quiet at the moment – as it was for stretches before.
June 25, 2003 at 12:05 #91589Jim,
Not wanting to detract any further from this thread as it was back on the path of a constructive nature for a few posts there but popular topics like this are the life-blood of our forum. It’s a nailed on certainty this topic will be filed in the ‘Archive’ section. For the record most topics end one of 2 ways which are :
a) When it is considered dead when people stop adding their views and it hasn’t been added to for +30 days in which case it gets deleted or filed in the archive section.
b) It is an extremely offensive thread or childish and is locked or deleted by Admin which luckily is not a common trait here on TRF.
I think this thread has far from run it’s course as I feel for the most part this has been an enjoyable read not to mention extremely popular! You are certainly welcome to your opinion that you have read enough on the topic as everybody is entitled to an opinion but I beg to differ but isn’t that what debates all about?
MorgansH,
Sound like we have similar views after all!
Ian,
Intrestingly enough I’m in the middle of starting a new topic about how unique every race is and your post made me smirk at the chance of such a post!
