I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the BBC’s coverage of the grand national today. I think it was the most entertaining to date with a number of great features. John and Gary or the new laurel and hardy were particulary good in their tour of liverpool.
It always helps to have the winner in the national and landed a nice 16/1 antepost on Ballabriggs, what a ride, what a trainner and what a horse.
But hats off to the BBC a great afternoon of coverage, usually I find their race day coverage can be a little drawn out or dry, however I really enjoyed my day on the sofa, a few cold beers, missus gone out and a nice winner. I taught my look was out when rare bob unsaeted Bryan Cooper in the handicap chase though so was bitting my nails before the National.
Ill be toasting Donald McCain and Jason Macguire in the pub tonight!!
April 9, 2011 at 16:21 #349462You must have been either the producer or director.
April 9, 2011 at 16:51 #349465Totally agree, first class stuff. Had a fantastic afternoon watching the racing.
The sooner they are given Cheltenham the better.
April 9, 2011 at 17:18 #349468I’m obviously dreaming, or is this a joke thread?
April 9, 2011 at 18:03 #349481I always enjoy BBC’s coverage. The only problem i have is some of their camera angles make it hard to follow what’s going on in the National, but other than that again the 4 hours flew by. I love the Grand National
April 9, 2011 at 18:08 #349482Why do you think it’s a joke thread Rich?
Are you a sofa salesman ?
April 9, 2011 at 19:04 #349490Just back from Aintree and catching up on the day on the BBC – looks great coverage to me … so another thumbs up!!!
April 9, 2011 at 19:32 #349498The only thing the BBC’s coverage has going for it is the absence of ad breaks. In every other aspect it’s inferior to Channel 4.
April 9, 2011 at 19:53 #349505Why can’t we go back to the camera angles that were used successfully year after year. The camera looking down from on high should be used for the post race analysis not the live coverage.
It’s always nice to see Richard Pitman on the BBC, you know then it must be Grand National Day
April 9, 2011 at 20:06 #349510I thought the BBC coverage was very good today. The multitude of camera angles enabled the event to transcend the usual animals running around a field viewing experience, into something more akin to what we see in big time football, rugby and cricket. The race was all the better for it.
They seemed to put a lot of resources into the coverage this year. Job well done, imo.
April 9, 2011 at 20:13 #349513I couldn’t really knock it but Bechers didn’t seem the same without the usual head-on angle.
April 9, 2011 at 20:27 #349520I couldn’t really knock it but Bechers didn’t seem the same without the usual head-on angle.
I agree entirely I wish they’d go back to it. It’s a much better angle for knowing where everything is. That and the angled front shot on the chair. Not keen on the shot from the back…
April 9, 2011 at 23:00 #349546I also agree the new side-on shot of Bechers is nowhere near as good as the old head-on shot – bring it back BBC! While you’re about it please don’t follow Channel 4 and have someone interviewing the winning jockey after each race. Its unnescessary and another of the reasons why I hardly watch C4 anymore and prefer to watch Racing UK or ATR.
April 9, 2011 at 23:08 #349549The coverage today was a total shambles.
The cameras were set at bechers on a wire and the director had no alternative camera angle. We had a dead horse being shot or whatever, and even as the fence has been bypassed, the director had no choice – or chose – to cut to an overhead shot of a dead horse.
I could list a hundred other cocks ups today. How can a broadcaster who thinks that only 9 days of racing or whatever is worth broadcasting be given this job?
A terrible shambles, and anyone who thinks that Parrot and Wiltshire are entertaining needs to be sectioned.
April 9, 2011 at 23:49 #349555I’ve just the BBC race coverage for the first time, courtesy of the BBC2 re-run.
RichK has it spot on re: the Bechers issue, and sadly Auntie Beeb prostrated itself where showing / not showing the stricken Dooneys Gate was concerned. Neither the sideways shot favoured on the first circuit, nor the overhead on the second, were ever going to disguise what was happening behind the screens as well as the iconic, much-loved head-on favoured in the past.
After today, however, I wonder if it might be making a comeback in 2012.
Picture repeat circumstances to today’s. Field sidles to the far outside of the course, past the chequered flags, and at the right moment………. SWITCH to head on camera, pan it 15-30 degrees anticlockwise, and instantly catch all runners filing past Bechers, screens, etc. on the run-through without (a) showing the contents behind the screens, (b) losing any sense of occasion or action.
Now in all honesty, how hard would that have been?

April 10, 2011 at 00:09 #349557At least we didn’t get shots of a stricken beast still trying to get to it’s feet as the horses went past on the second circuit [no screens]as we did in poor Osiera’s race the other day at Gowran Park. Can’t imagine what the viewing public would have thought of that.
April 10, 2011 at 00:24 #349558John Parrott seems like a nice enough guy and is a good snooker pundit, but the awful double act he does with big Gary is cringeworthy. DESIST!
