On a tangent from pilgarlic’s point about Capeland in the Clarence House- what do you all think about Marracudja’s rise on top of his Wetherby rise? I think Skelton has a very good point- this 9yo is hardly 20lb better than when he walked down the lorry ramp at Wetherby. Part of the handicapper’s explanation is that he that Marracudja should run off a similar weight to Capeland should they meet in a handicap next- but Capeland finished 40l behind the winner, clearly running nowhere near form so you can’t judge the two horses against each other really.
Bridget Andrews’ crime was, as the trainer has pointed out, to “do our best to do our best”. She would have been better off, once she had the beating of Capeland and Janika, to take her leg off her horse completely, wave her arms about a bit to make it look like she was doing something, and finish 15l behind the winner.
Realistically Marracudja was competing for the 3rd place prize money and this objective was achieved but I don’t think he should have been walloped with that big a rise. Of course it is always going to be hard to judge the best G1 horses against essentially G3 horses in small field races, early-ish in the season when the G1ers aren’t going to murder each other the whole way round…but I would have thought a bit more discretion could be used.
January 21, 2020 at 23:22 #1480472Looking up the stewards’ report to see if there was anything about Capeland (there wasn’t), it says that Marracudja bled. The horse did well to get as close as it did then; mind you it could have bled quite late in the race I suppose.

Your thread makes for an interesting read; I’ve looked at the Ascot race and personally reckon the ratings movements are very much in line with what is expected. The winner goes up 4lbs, 2nd being now 12yr is dropped 2lbs. The third Marracuda was put up 11lbs.
With only 5 runners the other two (4th & 5th) where vitually ignored by the H’capper Chris Nash and this was to be expected. I think its Chris Nash responsible for this chase distance.Marracudja’s earlier run was questioned by the Stewards as to the improvement when winning at Wetherby and subsequently raised 9lbs. I think the Ascot run reinforced the improvement and by any measure against runners rated 170 and 168 this 71/2 length beating at level weight strengthens the argument for the further weight rise.
Just thoughts
AlexJanuary 22, 2020 at 09:41 #1480486Skelton coming across as a baby, “I want my pounds back” FFS. They have got the prize money, the handicapper has assessed the performance. They didn’t have to run. What does he want to happen exactly? Buggered if I know. Just having a good old whinge.
Whining that they won’t run in a small field Graded race again – fair enough, don’t win the money then mate.

January 22, 2020 at 13:14 #1480501Instead of complaining, maybe Skelton should concentrate on trying to get some genuine Grade 1 horses into the yard so he can win these sort of races instead of taking a chance with a handicapper and expecting its run to be ignored.
It would give him something interesting to talk about when Ladbrokes ask him to share his thoughts with us.

Ok, so on this basis, don’t run if you don’t want to risk going up stupidly in the handicap. So instead we’ll be watching lots of open G1s with 2 and 3 runners weekly. The prize money is there, the race was run in such a way that there wasn’t going to be a mad distance between all the horses racing.
Marracudja was ridden to pick up the pieces and get some prize money.11 pound rise is nothing short of ridiculous.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 22, 2020 at 14:33 #1480508Perhaps they would like to return the £16k and return to their previous mark?

True enough, though not quite as hilarious as his assistant claiming, “Dan’s trip to Disneyland has been RUINED” over the head of a dodgy stewarding decision. If ever a quote needed an accompanying Daily Mail sadface photo…perhaps of Dan holding a copy of the Racing Post, doing the DM sad face with Mickey’s comforting arm around his shoulders and the castle in the background.
It’s a pity Danstriptodisneyland is 2 characters too long for a horse’s name.January 22, 2020 at 15:59 #1480514“True enough, though not quite as hilarious as his assistant claiming, “Dan’s trip to Disneyland has been RUINED” over the head of a dodgy stewarding decision.”

I think you’ve missed my point, or just ignored a lot of it.

She needs to spend some time over in Ireland
January 23, 2020 at 07:32 #1480571I took a look at my class table to see what Marracudja actually grade is, at this moment in time, he is a Grade 3 horse.
Class ratings:
18thJan20 – 144 (Gr3)
21stDec19 – 137 (Listed)
23rdNov19 – 126 (Class2)
26thOct19 – 129 (Class2)
12thOct19 – 124 (Class2)So Marracudja has improved 20lbs in class during his last 5 races.
Mike.
