Yes, well done to Paul Hanagan, really pleased for him.

He seems a really pleasant, genuine sort of bloke (as well as very talented), a huge improvement on his surly predecessor as champion.

It’s also great to seem someone make it after joining the stable straight from school 14 years ago – top marks to Fahey as well.

His ‘acceptance speech’ on Ch4 was very moving, very gracious, very eloquent and had me in tears. A great ambassador for the sport imo.

Just to add my congratulations. I couldn’t agree more with you all about how well he has ridden all year and the gracious way he has conducted himself when under such pressure recently.
Richard Hughes deserves praise too, he has ridden superbly this season and has been a man possessed recently, I hope he can take this form forward for the future.

The most striking aspect was just how humble and gracious he has been. Always willing to do interviews, talk to anyone, people may see Frankie Dettori is the perfect ambassador for the sport, they are wrong, Paul Hanagan is.

Absolutely agree with every sentiment on here!

I’m actually a bit mad with myself for not replying to this sooner. Unfortunatley it’s a fact of life though that what people see as something bad from a jockey (MS on Zenyatta) will always take centre stage over something good. I was too busy and wrapped up in slagging off that performance to even remember the achievements of Hanagan and Hughes throughout the season!

A thoroughly deserving winner if ever there was one and you also have to feel a bit sorry for RH as it was always going to be harsh on whoever came 2nd. Both champions IMO.

Also really pleased for SDS to bring up the century yesterday, another rising star who’s had an excellent season!

As a sequel to the battle, both riders incurred lengthy periods of suspension

Hughes was also done under totting up:-

Does this mean Hughes misses Royal Ascot 2011 or are some days suspended until June pending further transgressions?

Totting up is so complicated I can’t understand it!

    Thought it had been reformed!

Why not just suspend the horse and replace him down the field if he wins. That would stop all the nonsense.Owners and trainers would no longer ask for the supreme effort from the jockeys.

The topping-up procedure doesn’t work – just scrap it.

Does anyone think Richard Hughes will be a “safer” rider next year? I don’t. As such, it is pointless banning him, and banning jockeys in such huge bulk through "topping-up" just creates negative publicity from any jockey apart who gets banned, apart from Eddie Ahern. Not only that, most of the period jockeys are banned for with "topping-up" makes no sense whatsoever because most of the ban is served during the A/W season. And when they are banned when it matters, like Hughes seemingly will be for Royal Ascot 2011 unless I‘ve misunderstood it, they obviously complain. 19 days, for what it’s worth, is what some jockeys get in two suspensions or less in other countries.

What is most fascinating is that Hughes has complained about his treatment seemingly citing what he did for the sport, which was nothing whatsoever btw. Apart from the fact he it totally delusional in expecting the BHA to show him leniency because his efforts allowed Rodders and co to promote “racing“, it’s certainly an interesting point. Can jockeys benefit from this wider exposure, (supposedly wider, not at all really) and how will it interfere with the rulers efforts to both rule and promote the sport?

Huge fan of Hughsie he’s got it all and if ever anyone deserved to be champion it’s him.

But the right man won. Paul Hanagan kept his cool despite the fact he must have felt like a golfer needing to hole a 40 footer to win over the last 2 weeks.

The media say he’s the people’s champion which I hate to be honest. It’s all so BS as he’s not the loveable Dettori type.

He’s Champion Jockey because he’s a world class rider which you have to be to beat off the likes of Hughsie Moore etc.
