Can’t see it making the slightest difference to viewing figures.
The more I know the less I understand.

June 25, 2025 at 20:01 #1734655I think British racing’s profile has diminished sufficiently that a racehorse of any colour would struggle to capture the public imagination nowadays. The recent dual National winner Tiger Roll never came remotely close to having the fame of Red Rum, for example.
Grey horses are eyecatching, and I am sure this helps make them more memorable to those who engage with racing on a casual basis. It’s an interesting question as to whether Desert Orchid would have been as popular with the general public if he hadn’t been grey. I suspect his colour did contribute towards his popularity.
June 25, 2025 at 20:15 #1734657Dessie’s colour was almost certainly a factor he was to coin a phrase a flashy grey. It also helped he showed up on Boxing Day to win the King George in flamboyant fashion and back in those days it made the news headlines, not sure it still does. The general public won’t give a fudge about Field Of Gold grey or not.
The more I know the less I understand.
June 25, 2025 at 20:52 #1734658Only 4 channels and no internet probably did wonders for Dessie though his colour probably helped.
“But apart from Daylami, Dalakhani and Alpinista…”
Not an all time great but Charyn won three G1s last year.June 25, 2025 at 21:08 #1734662The French miler Solow is another fairly recent top-class grey, though his peak was now a decade ago.
