Might be showing my age here but remember a program on TV called THE COMEDIANS. Some great comedians on there.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.February 10, 2022 at 15:28 #1582371Pleased to see Jerry Sadowitz getting a mention. I remember his late night TV shows as very funny. Saw him a few years ago and he’s an astonishing performer. Some of his material is very near the bone but it’s so quick-fire that he’s onto the next joke before you realise you’ve been offended! His response to being cited as an influence for the likes of Jimmy Carr & Frankie Boyle was “I’m sorry I’ve given some very nasty people a good living” which, in itself deserves respect.
In addition to the many fine names already mentioned, I’d add Dave Allen (albeit hardly a “stand-up”!) and Bill Bailey.
February 10, 2022 at 20:11 #1582467Is it worth mentioning Harry Worth ? Probably not but he was able to levitate.
I do think Ken Dodd and Tommy Cooper tie for the top spot. Tony Hancock and Sid James was a TV show that was much awaited in the house I lived in – might have been on a Wednesday night and high point of the week back then. Fawlty Towers is in the same class. Have I forgotten anyone – Oh Harry Worth !
February 13, 2022 at 16:45 #1583046“Gad Sir, this fellow’s good, damned good Sir, even hotter than Colonel Blimp in a turkish bath. What would you say to that ?…
“You say so, Sir, well it’s doggingly wet outside, dark is an understatement, the dank is drawing in and it’s iffy… Let’s give this Harry chappy his nine minutes of possible fame, and just see what he can do to change the weather.
” What ho, put him on ! ”
February 15, 2022 at 00:46 #1583214David Allen was good as a sit down comic. Chris Tarrant bests him – the man’s a genius !
February 16, 2022 at 14:24 #1583470It was a joke. Made nearly two months ago. Move on.
February 16, 2022 at 15:06 #1583476Some people just like protesting and being outraged.
Once they have got Carr tarred and feathered, then ruined and expelled from public life forever, they will forget about it five minutes later and search for the next thing to be outraged about.
February 16, 2022 at 15:20 #1583478Bob Monkhouse was a terrific comedian. The thicko pitchfork posse attacking Jimmy Carr are almost as funny as his gypsy joke.
BUY THE SUN
February 16, 2022 at 16:36 #1583494I liked Dave Allen as well, and also the late great Victoria Wood. I used to watch Jasper Carrott with my dad. He didn’t try to be edgy or anything but he was a funny man.
February 17, 2022 at 21:03 #1583601I agree re Victoria Wood greenasgrass, a very talented writer and pianist as well as stand up.
A more consistent bunch of people who are collectively deluded they are:
1. Clever And 2. Funny it would be hard to imagine.Posters on an internet forum perhaps?
February 20, 2022 at 14:48 #1583987I happened on Kenneth Williams late last night in the company of a certain Mr Nosey Parkinson. I must say Kenneth certainly held a stage and the other guests there were rooted motionless in their chairs and transfixed and in complete awe of his marvellously worded utterances. Such a quick brain had he, and could talk eruditely, just like a machine gun, rat a tat tat tat and almost faster than his listeners can digest.
One of the marvellous Goons but he came to pictorial evidence in the Carry Ons. For me he comes to mind first then Babs Windsor, Hawtrey ( the thin bloke) Sid James and Bernard Breslaw and that Phillips chap was good who was in the doctors series – Doctor in the house. There was a small guy with black hair – all excellent, and never forgetting the larger than life Hattie Jacqes, but Kenneth’s flaring nostrils just pip the post with Hawtrey close up behind him.February 20, 2022 at 15:12 #1583991I meant to watch that last night Gamble but then forgot. I remember him being on Parkinson many times and he was excellent. Only other one who came close on that show in terms of comedy (that I remember) was Peter Cook (though Joan Rivers was also very funny)
February 20, 2022 at 15:51 #1583996I chanced upon it Tongue and taped it and watched it at 1am – have been watching the three part about Ghislaine Maxwell with psychologists assessing the Epstein and Andrew interviews.
I was picking my way through a field of mud on my way to sea Michel Jarre ( docklands concert in 88 ) and walking next to me – Robert Maxwell – a heavy guy with a pair of very shiny black shoes and well dressed with a sort of city coat on and tie. He seemed more miserable than even me .Yes Cook was always a great watch and highly entertaining – the split with Dud hit him hard. Joan Rivers – well what can you say – the Queen of splash !
February 25, 2022 at 20:59 #1584733Gary Delaney is probably my favourite of the current bunch of ‘mainstream’ comedians.
Jethro, Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown and Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson (if he counts as a comedian) were my favourites from previous generations.
I’ll also mention that I went to a darts exhibition a few years ago that was compered by Martin Fitzmaurice (are you ready, ladies and gentlemen let’s play darts!) and he was as funny as any comedian I’d ever seen.
Oh, concerning Michael McIntyre, if you do want a laugh at a clip with him on it go to YouTube and check out Eliot Fletcher swearing at Five Star on Going Live! McIntyre is the little boy sitting next to Sarah Greene.
February 25, 2022 at 22:54 #1584749Dragut a highly informative and interesting list of bellyaughs there. It’s made me realise I’ve got seriously impaired vision 😄 and must get out more !
