I’m sure there was a documentary about Richard Pryor on Sky Arts recently. I often watch Sky Arts in the early hours as it’s still on when BBC4 ends at 4am. But this time I nodded off and I don’t have catchup for Sky.

Yes I’m the same with McIntyre he leaves me stone cold. That whole thing about
someone coming in through corridors to a room, under whatever pretext, and the
walls come down and the audiance all applaud whilst the “guests” try to look
shocked is such a crock of Sh!t.

I love the quotes from Groucho Marks, but for a stand up comedian I have
nearly wet myself and my jaw hurt watching Billy Connolly live. It’s just
effortless story telling, Sorry to see he’s fighting Parkinson’s. Great
    man :rose:

Richard Pryor live is on Netflix moe.

I actually saw it on cinema release way back

The other performance is live on sunset strip which is on Amazon. That includes the brilliant mafia piece but also is more reflective

Agree with big g about Connolly. Very similar to Pryor in many ways (and he did lift an idea or two in fact)

That Chris Rock tour from the 90’s in which he talks about the differences between black people and another certain word I won’t type – had me in absolute stiches. He’s gotta be up there for me because watching that really made me appreciate good stand up comedy.

Billy Connoly has to be up there too, along with Bill Burr. Peter Kay as well has a tremendous ability to see the subtle humour in everyday things.

I haven’t got Netflix either clivexx. I like the new wave of lady comedians eg Diane Morgan and Aisling Bea.

I do like Bill Burr, Ben. Think he’s got a few shows on Netflix if anyone’s interested. Is that Chris Rock show the same one where he says bullets should cost $5,000?

I’ve never seen much of Robin Williams but this one always makes me laugh. There’s some swearing but it’s a thread about comedians so I’d hope nobody is bothered.

Richard I don’t remember completely what other jokes Chris Rock did in that tour, think it was his 1996 Bring The Pain special. No way would he be allowed to tell those jokes today! I mean look at that Jimmy Carr stuff recently, bloody ridiculous, it’s comedy ffs!!!

And that Robbie Williams bit is a classic great shout :yahoo:

    “I haven’t got Netflix”

I’m fairly sure it costs money to subscribe – always good to hear I’m making (yet another) saving!

This fuss about Jimmy Carr is nonsense. For a start it’s been on there for over six weeks with apparently views in the millions. But someone posts 30 seconds of it on Twitter and there’s uproar with government ministers trying to cancel him. Woke snowflakes.

I watched it last night and it’s really not that bad, he takes aim at all sorts of groups.

My mum & dad once went to see Bob Monkhouse and said he was both clever & funny and without using any bad language, so I’ll throw his name in.

If anyone if upset by a safe comedian pretending to be edgy like Jimmy Carr, I think they would go into meltdown if they ever saw Jerry Sadowitz.

Nobody, has mentioned a female comedian as yet.

I would nominate the late Joan Rivers for female contender and here she is on the “Graham Norton Show” at 80 years of age:

Jerry Sadowitz perhaps falls into those comedians who might be good but are distinctly dislikeable? Maybe just my brief impression but a bit like the truly vile and creepy Frankie Boyle but with talent?

I got on trouble on twitter when I said “heard Boyle gets depression. Fingers crossed”

I have to relate to them rather than want to push them under a train

Connolly and Pryor are just very very hard nosed but very very human and likeable. They are just good blokes

Peter Kaye was a good shout here too. Phoenix nights was magical

Someone mentioned Bob monkhouse. He was good but there was cold edge maybe and why he didnt quite bring the house down? Same with Ben Elton etc etc

There is a female comedian who was extraordinary but not really a stand up. She was brilliant. Thats it

“Jerry Sadowitz perhaps falls into those comedians who might be good but are distinctly dislikeable?”

He does not make any attempt to be likeable.

When his show “The Pall Bearers Revue” was on BBC2, it was the most complained about show in the history of British television. It got relegated to the graveyard slot after “Newsnight” about half way through its run and was preceded by announcements which in effect disowned it. The show has never been repeated or released on DVD.

Aside from a short lived series in the early days of Channel 5, Sadowitz has not worked for television again.

He is not for the faint hearted but he is funny. He is also a very talented sleight of hand magician.
