Fair play to Storm The Stars he is a really tough fighter no doubt – praise also to his jockey Pat Cosgrave for not getting into a battle for the lead when Medrano went on again, as that decision probably won him the race.
Unfortunately, I think he will be getting a holiday for not switching his whip when carrying the runner up accross the course – I don’t think the interference cost Bondi Beach the race as the winning distance was not a short head or neck.
Just watching the live stewards enquiry on C4 and O’Brien claims it did cost him the race but Cosgrave states that he was drawing away at the finish line.
3 days for careless.Never switched whip hand. Margin was such that second was never going to get race.
August 19, 2015 at 14:36 #1174715A real battling and staying performance from Storm The Stars and augurs well for the St Leger even if he’ll have to survive there any horses O’Brien chooses to throw at him (presumably including the reopposing Bondi Beach) and Gosden’s Mr Singh.
August 19, 2015 at 14:48 #1174733Betway are the only firm to price this up so far and look to have made a gift to the nation, with Storm The Stars at 3/1.
No reason any of those behind him in the Irish Derby will reverse the form and Time Test doesn’t look the type of horse to end up in the race. Order Of St George was ahead of Forgotten Rules and Aloft lifted the Queens Vase but Storm The Stars sets a clear standard to beat and 3/1 looks money waiting to be collected.
Christmas in July:-
Great Voltigeur Storm The Stars 3/1 (Betway) Kerching!
My most confident bet of the season. All that planning and getting on early really reaped the benefits as I got 3/1 and he won at err….. 3/1
A wee stewards enquiry to endure and the usual pish from the Channel 4 team and Graeme Cunningham camping it up like a bufoon, shouting that “He was 10/1 ON to keep the race, now it’s only 5/1 ON, that’s significant”
What a load of old Jack and Danny. We’ve seen much worse and the winner has kept the race.Looking forward, I think Bondi Beach ran a cracking race but I tend to agree with the jockey that Storm The Stars was getting on top late on.
Bondi Beach was still 10/1 for the Leger with Boylesports and I would take that if I was looking to cover my bet.
Giovanni Canaletto ran to his form with Storm The Stars almost to the pound and I see no evidence that he can turn that around in the Leger.
It was a race of bitter disappointments from Balios, Medrano and Aloft. The latter horse’s win in the Queen’s Vase must be a candidate for worst race of the year.
Happy to have tipped Storm The Stars for the Leger at 16/1, he’s still good value at 5/1 in my opinion.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Agree about Aloft. Medrano would be better sold, gelded and sent over hurdles. He likes it soft and would get that mid winter
August 19, 2015 at 17:05 #1175035William Haggas said afterwards that this race should put Storm The Stars spot on for the St Leger.
Despite his busy season Storm The Stars was deemed to have needed the race mentally, more than physically today because he is a tough horse who thrives on his racing. The 36 day gap was described as a “fair old while off” by Haggas, and 24 days to the Leger now would seem an ideal sort of gap for this tough looking sort.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 19, 2015 at 17:36 #1175104Although it is the obvious choice, the St Leger can turn into a real stamina test especially on easy ground and I think an extra 2F will play more into Bondi Beach & Aloft’s hands as they are much more lightly raced and are entitled to much more improvement than the winner (who was having his 8th race of the season so far).
I would be inclined to give him a much needed break (all these hard races will catch up to him eventually) and go straight to the Arc as he seemed to enjoy the easier ground and being by a Sadler’s Wells mare, soft ground at Longchamp would be no problem to him. Golden Horn won’t be there and regardless of Treve & Jack Hobbs, I still think it is an open race and for a horse that likes to be handy that could be a big advantage over the hold up horses.
With all that being said, connections will probably end up running him in both races!

What a load of old Jack and Danny. We’ve seen much worse and the winner has kept the race.I think the stewards didn’t have a hard decision to make in the end with the track going around the corner straight after the finish line. It’s natural for a horse to veer toward the turn, so if anything it’s the fault of the course. Bondi Beach was initially on that side (ish) and had to come in towards STS to get bumped back out again. I got scared and didn’t have a bet but STS was screaming out to me to be backed.
August 19, 2015 at 21:03 #1175518Well I’ve been wrong all day today, not least about Bondi Beach’s chances, he ran really well in this. If you like him for the St Leger you’d certainly be heartened by the fact that he has won over 1m 6f already, whereas Storm The Stars would be trying it for the first time.
It would have been a travesty for Storm The Stars to lose the race after that gutsy performance though. I thought he seemed to have the upper hand at that point, but it was a heart-in-mouth moment as they did swing quite a way over.

Bondi Beach ran really well and better than I had anticipated. He did win at 1m 6f but it was very hairy by a short head from his stable mate, as they both saw a off a very below par looking Forgotten Rules, who was conceding tons of weight. I just felt that Storm The Stars was getting the better of it at the death today. If I were a professional punter I would probably have saved on Bondi Beach for the Leger at 10/1 after today.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I don’t think Storm The Stars is quite good enough for the Arc. The trainer says he thrives on his racing and that he probably needed today’s race to sharpen him mentally. It would be a huge mistake to bypass the Leger. It is his best hope of lifting a group 1 race.
I doubt they will run Aloft in the Leger now. He was woeful today. I felt he might develop into a Leger horse if it came up really testing at Donny but I watched the Queen’s Vase form fall apart like a soggy Chinese Lantern and coming into to today’s race I had ruled Aloft out of it. He’s 25/1 for the Leger now and Bet Victor’s quote of 10/1 looks like some sick prank.
I would run Storm The Stars in the Leger and then make plans for next season. I have lightly pencilled him as the favourite for The John Porter at Newbury next April as a pipe opener, and it would seem sensible to also aim him at the Coronation Cup back at Epsom.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
