I don’t know if there was anything exacting about the conditions of the Newton Abbot Handicap Chase over two miles yesterday. The prize money seemed quite generous but it attracted just four runners.

Three of the four were trained far outside the hinterland coming from Yorkshire and Cheshire. The Nicholls trained favourite Matterhorn jumped poorly for de Boinville and the northern raiders mopped up all the prize money.

13k to the Jedd O’Keefe trained winner. Hard to believe that more local trainers had nothing suitable to run. Pathetic.

Agree in principle but bear in mind that we are talking about horses and you can’t just assume that stables will have a horse(s) that are suitable for the race (i.e. a summer jumper) and more importantly are actually ready/fit to run when these races pop up.
