Glad that was quickly cleared up re Choisir’s trainer ;) <br>There is no more gracious trainer around than Paul Perry, one of nature’s gentleman.

Thank you for putting me in the picture, Adrian, Venusian …. and Kingston Town, it seems. I am honestly glad to read it, and realise I was mistaken.

But I’d be telling fibsticks if I said I didn’t think that I recalled, in an earlier year, one of them saying words to the effect that Royal Ascot was nothing special in his eyes, after his horse had won . If it was true, why say it, particularly at a time like that when everyone was wishing him well.

It’s not impossible my memory’s worse than I thought. There’s never anything to gain from wanting  to believe the worst of people, is there?

As for McGrath I realise Cormack’s got the perspective right: it’s not a matter of life and death.

But I’m not persuaded that in that case it was a natural propensity for confusing the silks, but it does tickle me that I’m not even sure someone else didn’t shout out the winner’s name before him. I suspect they did. There was more than one person roaring into the mike at the time, wasn’t there?

There’s no way in the world I could recognise the silks of a medium to large field, and I get the feeling some commentators can identify all or most of the owners.

I could do without the emotionalism,  myself, but when all is said and done, better a genial soul than a clinical cypher I suppose.
