So, an Aussie horse didn’t quite win the race. Was it just me or did McGrath sound disappointed ? Not quite the next Peter O’Sullevan is he?
June 23, 2007 at 14:55 #66275He’s not fit to put the furry thing on Sir Peter’s MIC.
June 23, 2007 at 14:59 #66277"Takeover Target, he won’t be beaten .. oh! photo!"
Top comedy.
(particularly when accompanied by the footage which made it clear that it TT could be caught)
Is there anyone who thinks that guy is up to the job?
Steve

June 23, 2007 at 15:01 #66278He’s very poor to be honest.
June 23, 2007 at 15:13 #66279was going to start this thread myself.
a totallly amatuerish display……..laughable and probably the worst commentator going.
June 23, 2007 at 15:16 #66280I don’t think he’s a bad commentator, but on this occasion he let partiality get the better of him.

June 23, 2007 at 15:59 #66281He is only human after all and I think it is a good thing, to an extent, when the commentators get emotional. Kind of conveys the excitement a bit.
June 23, 2007 at 17:53 #66282I may be wrong, but I don’t think he even mentioned Soldier’s Tale in the finish, until the race was over.
But it was good to see Janiak’s face looking like thunder, too, as Clare Balding interviewed him after the race. He’s been one ungracious so-and-so, ever since Choisir won for him. He was very lucky to get off so lightly. How different was the attitude of Gai Waterhouse and Peter Moody.
I shouldn’t get annoyed by the emotional investment some Aussies cherish in getting one over on the old Poms, because really it’s sad. In the circumstances,  I wondered why the BBC put McGrath on as the commentator, after repeating AT LEAST four times that 3 of the first 4 in the Kings Stand were Aussies. Did he think we wouldn’t have noticed. Or that it would break our wee hearts.
This is not Ozzie bashing. I tend to hold them up as models of decency and sanity in relation to ourselves – though things have deteriorated, as they have pretty much everywhere in the Anglo-Saxon world – but when it comes to graciousness, I doubt if there’s any nationality as gracious as the English often under pathetic provocation.

June 23, 2007 at 18:13 #66283Joe Janiak didn’t train Choisir. Paul Perry did.

June 23, 2007 at 18:28 #66284Hello,
He obviously backed RED CLUBS, and quite correct, he never mentioned the winner until the prizes were dished out [bit of sarcasm there!].
At least he didn’t say POSSIE!!!
regards,
doyley
June 23, 2007 at 18:46 #66285Thanks, David. It must have been Takeover Target last year.
June 23, 2007 at 19:08 #66286Earlier in one race (even with the benefit of a slow motion replay) He called the winning distance a neck when it was half a length and later on could`nt call Soldiers Tale the winner when it was quite clear that Murtagh had got up.
Nothing to do with his Nationality He is quite simply not very good in a finish.<br>Maybe Thommo could set up a Commentators School<br> "Thats Christian Williams, they call Him MR Christian!"<br> "We`ll leave that one to the Judge"<br> "This will be a close finish. No, shes gone three lengths clear…."
June 23, 2007 at 19:59 #66287Hello,
Thommo called Metal Detector as fallen at Towester [it won!] and cost some guy £38K on Betfarce.
McGrath has not yet done that!!!

doyley
June 23, 2007 at 20:07 #66288Admittedly from memory, but I’m pretty sure Soldiers Tale was mentioned several times in the commentary.

Try 150k on Metal Detector and the Guy is Steve Porter. No one comes close to MJ commentating for being excitable. Proof of this should be viewed in the Foxhunters when they swing in and i swear i gurantee his face was purple in the run in.
June 23, 2007 at 20:31 #66290Grimes, you’re usually a good correspondent on this forum but you couldn’t be more wrong about Joe Janiak. As pointed out he didn’t train Choisir and last year he put up with the huge media interest after his first win with good humour.
This year he has really enjoyed both his placings at Royal Ascot (TT has now run 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th at RA).
After this race he was still beaming from ear to ear and congratulated the winning connections. He was getting back slaps from everybody for his horses good run and was polite and dignified with everybody.
He thanked all the Ascot officials for looking after him and his group so well and couldn’t have been nicer.
June 23, 2007 at 20:39 #66291That was my impression also.
