I find myself returning the compliment and agreeing with David.

A lot of people dismissing Golden Horn’s stamina doubts in the belief this is a sub standard Derby, so it apparently doesn’t matter?

The time to make that judgement is after the race, not before it.

The 1979 Derby didn’t look much of a race either.

Until Troy win it by seven lengths.

I have doubts about him staying as well. You have to really stay to win an Epsom Derby. A flat track, small field ten furlongs at York is way different to a big field, fast paced, twelve furlongs at Epsom.

If I were a bookie, I’d be lay, lay, lay on this one.

Not bred to stay – take in all the other imponderables at Epsom on Derby Day and there are better 7/4 chances.

There will be better 7/4 shots but equally there will be better 4/1 shots than Zawraq, better 5/1 shots than Elm Park, better 5/1 shots than Jack Hobbs and better 14/1 shots than Hans Holbein.

There is actually ample 2/1 about on Golden Horn and anyone who watched the Dante has no excuse for not being on at 3/1 with a run after the race.

Normally I would agree that 2/1 isn’t a good price but with the odds on Zawraq and Elm Park are worse value in my opinion and Giovanni Canaletto at 7/1 is laughable.

The bookies have the field going for them against the favourite but it’s a pretty awful looking field.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Stamina is almost always a critical element in the make up of a Derby winner, you just don’t get away with a lack in that respect. This fellow may yet turn out to have the necessary stamina but I think ID is right, 7/4 looks skinny enough.
It has the look of a sub-standard race, although that doesn’t necessarily preclude the winner turning out to be a star. I’d be really interested in Andre Fabre’s Grey Lion if he chose to send him given the apparent lack of depth.

Someone posted that Grey Lion had a blood disorder. He was pulled out at Sandown because he had a high temperature.

Grey Horses, French Horses? I’m seeing a worrying pattern here

Fabre has confirmed that Grey Lion misses the Derby, the horse is due back in full work only tomorrow, having been ill since the intended run at Sandown.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Could this be the first “Colour” winner for me in the Derby  The last one Golden Wonder in 1982 was a little before my betting time. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever backed the Derby winner. Plenty of seconds though.

Golden Fleece won the Derby in 1982.

Golden Wonder’s crisps were fine and their nuts were said to be “Jungle Fresh” but their horse didn’t win the Derby in 82.

Golden Fleece could’ve gone on to be an all time great. Shame he didn’t have the chance to prove it.

    Surely a no-brainer there.

You say it’s a no brainer but you are doubting the horse’s stamina. Surely it’s not a no brainer then?

Wasn’t there a hurdler called Golden Wonder? Jenny Pitman, perhaps?

I’m saying, SC, it was a no-brainer for connections to let him take his chance as their ‘bet’ will effectively be made at about 10/1 or more. I also said he may well have the recquisite stamina, just that I wouldn’t want to take 7/4, the bet his connections have made is at much better odds hence I stand by both comments – entering was a no-brainer, stamina doubts make 7/4 (or 2/1) poor value.

Unless he wins by 7L like Troy that is…

You had to feel for Racing Journalist Marcus Townsend today. His headline in the article in today’s Daily Mail read Lion Roars Into Derby Mix

The article went on to explain that Racemail understood that Andre Fabre was thinking of taking Grey Lion to work at Epsom during the Breakfast With The Stars event a week tomorrow.

Poor old Marcus had his article torn to shreds before lunchtime when Fabre revealed that the horse will miss the race.

That’s the nature of the game that makes fools of us all. I don’t know where he gets his inside information but he should have checked TRF for the heads-up B-)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I strongly doubt that the horse has been entered as a money making project, trying to invest £75000 in order to net the 1st prize and get 10/1 on a 2/1 shot.

For a start Anthony Oppenheimer hardly needs the money and secondly it makes no sense as a bet full stop.

Why would you put up £75,000 to try to win the Derby purse, when you are already in the French Derby, which was worth 945,000 Euros to The Grey Gatsby last year?

The French Derby would have less doubts, probably a poorer field and in all probability Golden Horn would go off a much shorter price than 2/1.

If there was a no-brainer option, surely the French Derby was the no-brainer.

To me, a no-brainer situation is one with no downside. If there are stamina concerns it hardly seems the obvious decision. As I have already said, it can’t be about the money, the safer and no further money required option was in France.

I can see why some may think 2/1 is short but this years race is Boggin’ on the quality front. 2/1 will be value if Golden Horn wins by seven lengths like Troy, equally value if he wins by a short head like Benny The Dip.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

He’s a current racehorse trained in Ireland. Second in last year’s Irish National. I think VTC has a bit of a soft spot for him (or did) ;-)
