If connections don’t take heed of what happened after last year’s race at Punchestown then please listen to Townend’s words after the race:

“He pulled out all the stops today. We had to go for reserves there that only the really special ones have.”

Don’t want to see him again until the John Durkan or maybe bring him over for the Betfair Chase as that is usually run on his preferred soft/heavy ground.

Mullins prob is the he’ll have owners wanting to go to the GC next year , it’s great have all these horses but they’ll come a point when he’ll struggle to keep all the owners happy

He hasn’t so far, got all the owners beautifully trained and eating out of his hand.

L’ Homme Presse for me was running on empty going to the last and saying he would prefer better ground is a bit odd considering the better ground at Ascot (good to soft) was given as a reason for his average run there (along with the trip) even though he has won 4 times on good to soft ground and the race was only 1F shorter than the Lingfield race he won prior to Ascot.

LHP has winning form on soft (3 times) and at 3m½f but the problem is, he is just not as good a stayer as the first 3 home today and that final uphill run in the Gold Cup finds out any chinks in stamina and many a good 3m chaser has been found out by it (Wayward Lad, Florida Pearl, One Man to name a few).

Can’t see him winning a Gold Cup even on good to soft ground and with his preference for going left handed it would leave his best bet for G1 wins being in races like the Betfair Chase/Ryanair/Aintree Bowl/Savills Chase/Irish Gold Cup….unfortunately those last two would likely see him facing GDC and he ain’t beating him no matter what the ground is.

Betfair would be a good shout for LHP. I wonder if Grey Dawning will run there or go for the graduation chase that he won this season.

Prob is Betfair has a decent chance of being soft to , would you keep him for Aintree or Punchestown ?

JP and his team are the only ones who get any sort of say. The rest can pop off elsewhere if they don’t like it and see how they get on (as the O’Learys did, different reason but same result). While Mullins is winning, he can do what he likes. People with money didn’t get money by thinking they know best outside their own area of expertise and the owners understand this.

For LHP? He stays 3 on soft, the BANC was pretty yucky the year he won it. He was at the end of his rope when he fell in the King George but that was left handed against peak BMG.
Won’t get as much competition at Haydock.

Well I’d say you’re right, if owners want to go gold cup and he doesn’t think it’s the right move he’ll let them go there with Patrick on the horse (unless it’s a JP horse), lose and go to the Ryanair or Grand National the following year depending on whether the horse is too fast or too slow for the GC.

    I can’t believe L’Homme Presse doesn’t stay.

…It’s possible he isn’t as good on heavy, but doubt it. I don’t think he’s run on heavy, but the Browns Ad’ he won was pretty soft.

Haven’t seen the sectionals, maybe he went too quick in front? But doubt that too.

imo Most probable reason for LHP not being at his best today is the Ascot Chase. Doesn’t matter that he won or lost there, just running is enough. Less than a month ago and many trainers don’t run their horses on that at Ascot (or anywhere else for that matter) on that day because it is too close to Cheltenham.

If given a prep maybe on at Cheltenham trials day – the race Cappodano won – LHP will have a chance next year.

It might be that injury has meant he just isn’t the same horse

I love that Hanlon has posted a video of Hewick in his stable watching Galopin Des Champs winning the Gold Cup!

The one unsatisfactory aspect of the race was Fastorslow unseating when still going well (and then making a nuisance of himself). I wonder where he would have finished if the partnership remained intact?
