After a search I realised I didn’t notice a memorial thread for this boy. Please correct if necessary.
Ten years ago he won the Racing Post in a style that made myself, and many racing fans, very excited. Sadly he went on to be fatally injured in the Gold Cup.
This was a tragic loss of a potentially brilliant young horse. I know many people remember him still, so I wanted to mark his passing as we approach the tenth anniversary of his death.
March 3, 2010 at 22:39 #280336I remember Gloria & remember being very upset that a novice had been run in the gold cup & felt at the time this contributed to his death I remember watching him being led into the horse ambulance with my fingers crossed that at the very least he would live in retirement but sadly this was not to be!! Did we loose a potential Golden miller that day who knows what might have been.
I’m sure he’s in horse heaven with all the other greats Dessie Best mate One Man.
RIP Gloria Victis
March 4, 2010 at 07:15 #280346I remember that day all too vividly too – I had that feeling that something nasty was going to happen and unfortunately it did to the most talented and aptly named Gloria Victis – hindsight is wonderful but I do think the connections should have given him another year before going for the Gold Cup. Lanzarote was another inexperienced chaser who fell fatally in the Gold Cup he competed in as a novice. I actually feel races like that should not be open to novices … though obviously it’s not a view shared or something would be changed …
March 4, 2010 at 15:26 #280401I think that his Racing Post win is etched in everyones memory forever, it was so spectacular. Perhaps one of the most suitable names for a horse, ever, as well.
March 4, 2010 at 15:41 #280402There was a part on Tony McCoy’s DVD in regards to Gloria Victis, the horse was loved so much by McCoy, and he was so distraught with what happened at Cheltenham.
March 4, 2010 at 21:04 #280479have to agree with Ten Plus the Gold Cup is not a race for Novices someone needs to look at rules to stop young future stars being pushed too far too young & all too often paying the ultimate price !!!
March 5, 2010 at 17:58 #280656Sorry but I disagree that Novices should be banned from the race.
In this day and age there are some pretty mature chasers still carrying the novice tag, particularly the French imports.
I believe that every owner and trainer has a duty of care towards their charge in every race that they enter them for and the onus is on them to run them only in races that they are fair tasks for them to be set.
If GV was mine I would not have run him in the race (I’m not after-timing, I said so back then) but I feel that a blanket ban is too heavy handed.
March 5, 2010 at 18:21 #280659I compiled a video of Gloria Victis and put on youtube a while ago. It shows the closing stages of his wins in the Feltham Chase & Racing Post Chase. Plus the closing stages of the Gold Cup.
Here’s the link for anyone interested.

A very nice, but very touching video, Arazi.
Definitely brings a saddened mood.
