Great post Steve,a few more memoirs never go amiss.I too remember 1997,with mixed feelings though.I was on
Silver Patriach
at
25/1 for the Derby and still cant believe that bloody ‘Benny’ held on.I was so P*ssed off as I had convinced the Missus to invest on the horse too and when she came in from shopping she could see from my expression I was gutted. The moment the result was announced I was on the phone for a price for the Grey to win the St Leger,I took what I thought was a measly 4/1 but got £250 on and ‘promised’ my Missus we would be there to collect.Lady Luck shone down on me for the next 3 months as not only did he get there, his biggest danger ‘Stowaway’ never ran and our fellow won at Even money fav..It all made up for that Ba*tard Benny Beating us at Epsom. Thanks for that. I actually tipped up Benny The Dip to my punters and not one of them backed him. I think there was a reverse psychology going on there. One punter even declared that Ian Balding’s Papua was the bet at 150/1. As I recall, that one finished up over hurdles!!
Silver Patriarch would probably have won that Derby on most tracks but sometimes a horse will just get away with it at Epsom. I don’t think Benny or Sleepytime ever won another race and I think Sleepytime was the only horse that really got the trip that day in the Guineas. I was also on Dazzle for Michael Stoute in that race at 25/1, having backed her before she won at Royal Ascot, and at one stage I thought she was going to win. I remember someone after that race asking Michael Tabor if he had backed his runner up Oh Nellie, to which he smiled broadly and replied "Yes, I had two quid each way on the Tote"
Memories eh?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 14, 2013 at 16:18 #439596Derby was always a lucky race for me, my first 3 bets in the race being:
85 Slip Anchor 16/1 (backed before the Lingfield Trial and allowing me to put more in to the building society that year than I earnt in wages!)
86 Shahrasthani 6/1 (believe I took a shorter price ante-post price than SP)
87 Reference Point 5/2 (My first £100 winning bet)Did not have 88 winner but then had Nashwan in 89.
It went downhill from there.

That 2.45 at York is a very tricky race, think I’m going to stay well away, good luck in it though!
I like the look of A Ladies Man in the 3.40 Sailsbury, can see him being by far the best horse in the race and the connections clearly think he’s a strong prospect. He’s 13/8 across the board at the moment so I’m just waiting to see if it goes back out to 7/4 on betfair before I jump on.
EDIT – just got it at 7/4, hope it doesn’t go out any further!

Great, came 2nd to a horse who’d had 11 races and no wins and my selection beat the winner by 2 lengths in its last outing!
That’s racing I guess.
