About to win the bumper at Musselburgh before breaking down yards from the line. Horrible ending to the weekend
February 4, 2024 at 16:58 #1679893That was a sickening sight. Very sorry for connections.
February 4, 2024 at 17:13 #1679896Horrible to watch and a horrible week with seven confirmed fatalities. I just wonder why he was placed 2nd when he threw his jockey over the line.
May he rest in peace
February 4, 2024 at 17:21 #1679898Just awful. Perhaps it is my memory playing tricks, but horses breaking down on the flat seems to occur more often than it used to.
RIP Getagin
February 4, 2024 at 17:24 #1679899Backed him, glad to say I didn’t see it , horrible for the yard , to be honest it’s been a horrible weekend for this , off to read a book , I’ve had enough
February 4, 2024 at 17:31 #1679901I used to think, just before Cheltenham that it was sad that some horses wouldn’t be coming home, but I’m beginning to feel that way every weekend now.
February 4, 2024 at 19:01 #1679919Sickening incident. Poor boy ran such a brave race.
RIP Getagin.2 horses lost at Musselburgh today breaking down, just 5 and 6 yr olds.
I feel the same Marlingford, seems that horses are breaking down more frequently on the flat. Is it due to breeding issues or the use of steroid injections, or bad surfaces ? More investigation needs to be done.
February 4, 2024 at 19:03 #1679921I stood next to his groom during the race, happiness to absolute despair in a second. I’ve had more cheerful experiences on the racecourse… Precious little consolation but Getagin tried his best to the end, R.I.P.
For what it’s worth ExRubyLight, Stewards decided that his rider hadn’t hit the ground until after the line, hence he was placed second.
February 4, 2024 at 19:42 #1679935Thanks, rob. I only watched the race once and I don’t want to watch any further replays. It was just my impression that horse and rider didn’t go over the line as one. It doesn’t matter at all, I was just trying to understand the judge.
February 4, 2024 at 21:47 #1679952Rob what an awful experience for poor Getagin’s groom. 😢 How on earth do you come to terms with an experience such as that.
Just feel so sad that we have lost so many in such a short space of time.
The worst run of fatalities for a long time on here and it’s heartbreaking 💔.
RIP Getagin🌹Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...February 5, 2024 at 13:19 #1680034I’m in my 50s and have watched racing since I was a kid. Have to say I don’t remember this level of catastrophic breakdowns on the flat, it seems an almost daily occurrence now. I wonder if the change in type is an issue – more ex flat horses rather than the old fashioned NH stores that were put away till six or seven – back in the day, chasers seemed much sturdier somehow.

You probably have a sound overall point here. I’m certainly one who thinks the trend of retiring horses to stud early is not good, I’d rather see breeding from tough stock with a nubmer of season’s breeding behind them. I believe the breed would benefit from it.
However, I don’t think Getagin was an example of beeding from weak stock. Having seen him twice in the paddock recently I’d say he had ‘jumper’ written all over him and was looking forward to seeing him going on to hurdling and chasing. He was by an established German bred NH sire Getaway who was well raced between ages of 3 and 7, the dam had established herself as a producer of jump winners and she was by Milan, a top NH sire. Getagin was housed in a stable that seldom have juvenile jumpers and normally give their charges time to mature.
February 5, 2024 at 16:07 #1680052From a purely selfish point of view I wish I hadn’t seen it. I thought, at first, that he’d just slipped and would get up. I heard that his groom ran to him to hold him down to stop him injuring himself further. Poor lad will be so traumatised. Awful for everyone. RIP
February 5, 2024 at 16:35 #1680055Getagin’s unraced dam has 5 foals that have so far seen a racecourse. 3 have now broken down fatally during races. Getagin’s death was almost identical to that of his half sister Broomhill Daisy in 2022 (also as a six year old).
February 5, 2024 at 16:46 #1680056And the other two: Inside Job (14/15 on her 2nd start over hurdles having bled from the nose) and I’m So Busy pulled up half a year ago after a 460 days break and unraced since. There are some issues with Ballcrina Girl’s progeny.
February 5, 2024 at 17:18 #1680062So Broomhill Daisy was also awarded 2nd place posthumously. How tragic. So, even using different sires the mares progeny are too fragile to race.
February 5, 2024 at 20:36 #168008624 hours after losing Getagin in the concluding bumper at Musselburgh, he sends out I Am Max to win the Carlisle bumper at 5/2.
Well done and good luck to him for the future!
