Okay Mark, looks like I’m going to Goodwood tomorrow. All I need to do is buy a tie and jacket at Asda overnight. Already got the umbrella and binoculars. Probably won’t bother with the hat, as it’ll make me sweat more.
Can’t believe the fare. £16.60 cheap day return from Ashford to Chichester, which is the same as Ashford to Brighton. Then get 1/3 off because of travelcard, so it is about £11.
9.30 Ashford arriving Brighton 11.20
11.33 Brighton arriving Chichester 12.24
Bus from train station.Won’t bother with food at the course, as I will have stuffed myself on the train for three hours.
All I need now is for someone to provide the winner of the getting out stakes, which looks like being the 6.00 3m Conditional Jockeys’ H’cap H’dle at Bangor.
This will be my first and probably last ever visit to Goodwood. This used to be one of my favourite meetings as a boy – probably because it was at the start of the Summer Holiday.
2.10 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]
Nick Mordin’s column yesterday mentioned how it was profitable backing horses moving to Luca Cumani’s yard. Well we have a contender today in Basaltico.2.35 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]
Hurricane Spirit JR Best
I think Best is one of about 4 trainers in Kent, so I’ve got to support my local boy.
This has been the classic sort of Gerald selection over the past few months. Ran well enough Goodwood 31/05/08 6f, Soft, off a 6 lbs higher mark, after meeting trouble in running.
Ran encouragingly last time out, on his 2nd run after a lay-off.3.25 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]
Lots of favourite racehorses running here. I think the betting forecast may have gone a tadge overboard on the high draw required here, though I haven’t done any research. I’m content to back Webbow from stall 12 c14/1.4.00 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]

4.35 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]
I’ve done a little bit of work on this, but don’t really have anything to say.5.10 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]
Traditionally, this would be an easy race for me, because I’d just back the foreign raider, Lessing. However, I don’t fancy her.
I’ll back whichever I think is the fittest bird, after looking at them in the paddock.5.45 Goodwood[/color:2s83z70j]
I’ll back Sloop JohnB, just because I’ve backed him before. If you remove his four runs over 6f, his form figures read quite impressive.July 31, 2009 at 03:19 #241884You know Gerald; you don’t really need a tie and jacket to get in to the Gordon (tattersalls) enclosure.
It’s only us members that have to suffer to watch our sport these days. As long as you don’t turn up in jeans or shorts, should get in o.k.
I usually go around to the Gordon side to see them in the pre-parade / parade ring. Look out for a ginger with a little red book.
Value Is EverythingJuly 31, 2009 at 03:35 #241886What, you’re saying the Richmond is sold out?
I’m thinking of being the fat bugger dressed all in red.
July 31, 2009 at 03:37 #241888Apparently Webbow & Extraterrestrial are the Pricewise selections. How infuriating.
edit: Spectait & Extraterrestrial are Pricewise. Typical piece of Betfair Forum misinformation. However, I subscribe to the cock-up theory of history, rather than the conspiracy one.
July 31, 2009 at 13:12 #241909What, you’re saying the Richmond is sold out?
I’m thinking of being the fat bugger dressed all in red.
Not 100% sure (don’t quote me) but I believe for the Glorious Goodwood meeting the Richmond enclosure is pre booked tickets or members only.

LostI’ve just checked my Betfair account, and my profit since it opened has now dwindled to £90. I was fearful it had dipped into the red.
I need to rein in, and I don’t feel the compunction to bet or to solve riddles either – I just want to follow what is going on.
At least meeting Mark has shelved the image of Beaker I previously had in my head.
http://crunchbang.org/uploads/102307110452-beaker.jpg
I’ll shelve the notion of learning to become an Internet whizzkid until August Bank Holiday, and instead I’ll keep a record of 2yo races. With the exception of Ghanaati, I’d have thought that nearly all Guineas & Derby winners run in August as 2yos.
With a maximum of about 6 meetings, that means there will be a maximum of about 12 races per day. I think I can just about keep up. What I can’t do is look at August 2008 as well.
I’ll do one race now before I go to bed, to get an idea of how long it takes, and to sort the layout out.

Al Khawarezmi really ought to be the Google A Runner in the RP. Arab Mathematician, from whose name the word algorithm derives.
I need to dig out the list from somewhere of the new Chefs-de-race I created. I’ll use these to modify the total points figure.
Al Khawarezmi GS Giant’s Causeway, and consequetly GGS Storm Cat
Shercon 4pts Darshaan
Venture Girl 8pts Giant’s Causeway, 4pts Storm Cat
Woodhouse Mill 8pts Danehill, 4pts SurumuI’ve cut out the DI and CD to avoid clutter – people can get an idea of what they will be by looking at the Dosage profile.
I’m just starting this, so its okay for people to say what they want included, and what can be left out. For example we have a few new sires here in the form of Oratorio, Footstepsinthesand, and Shamardal, but people can easily notice that elsewhere, either in the paper, or on the website.
August 1, 2009 at 14:01 #242061Alan Devonshire is the Google A Runner. I’d have thought most people would know who he is, without googling him. In addition he has run 15 times already. I think I win this one with the Arab mathematician.

I thought I would do the Irish 2yos as well, but apart from the main stables of O’Brien, Bolger, Weld etc I am having to input the horses myself. Rather creates the impression I’m the only person in the world interested in the dosage etc of Irish-trained horses.
I’ve changed the colours so that the things I’m interested in are in red.
I’m having second thoughts about having made Theatrical and Galileo Chefs-de-Race.
The last horse, Waajida, illustrates why the GSV figures are so out-of-date/inaccurate. Not only is Dubawi a First Season Sire, but he is by Dubai Millennium, who didn’t have time to show what he was like as a stallion.
Hopefully I’ll be able to speed up now I’m back on British land.
I’ve decided that it is a bit too much, and a waste of time anyway, to do this for Nurseries, so this will be the only Nursery in the collection.[/color:198uno0o]

Ostensibly, Love Delta has the best Dosage Points, best GSV, best Sire’s GSV and best Dam’s GSV, but some of those are close run things. Does anyone dare back it? In 7f Mdns, I used to prefer horses that had already run.
Goes to the "worst" horse in the race – though the one I found most interesting. No Northern Dancer or Mr Prospector on either side of the pedigree.[/color:1ftipzv5]

Although Arkellion, Jimmy The Poacher, Number One Guy and Black Sapphire all have good numbers, I slightly fancy Tominator, and will be interested in how he runs. There you go – a 12 runner race, and I’ve mentioned 6 of them!
I’m having my doubts about having made Gone West a CdR, and he is the principle reason Black Sapphire went up so much.
Gosh, I’m quite pleased with my effort with Tominator. I’ll now reveal the truth. It was the presence of Miswaki in the bottom half of the pedigree that marked him out for me – he seems to be quite effective there, as if he leavens the stolid stayers.

Not a great result for these ratings, but not too much of a surprise that a l’Abbaye winner sires the winner.

Looks like with the Yielding to Soft going it was of benefit to have raced previously.
[/color:2bq37vg4]August 2, 2009 at 22:35 #242327It is really infuriating – I can’t get on with Monday’s races because the Pedigree Query database is playing up. I’m knocking it on the head for the evening. A ******* shame. because we’ll now have to play catch-up all through the week, instead of having them done the previous evening.
