I guess they’ll have to put up duty on alcohol in the next budget, to compensate for the loss of sales ;)

I feel a little guilty now about poking fun, but I can’t compromise my principles on Mr Best’s … shall we say … less tangible achievements. I would however like to send my sympathies to his relatives. They will obviously be taking it badly, as will all footie purists.

    Well I wont be a hypocrite ,
I feel sorry for the person who did not get the transplant that GB recieved , clear and plain a waste of a healthy organ , which couldhave and perhaps wouldhave been giving to someone who actually cared abouthealthy living and to enjoy a new lease of life to go on for years and live , perhaps a parent with young children , perhaps a 15 year old boy or girl , who knows
A footballer and that is that , full stop , big deal , a job
Next thing you know actors and musicians and politicians will be put on pedestals ……………
Sorry for his family

I suppose the lifestyle comes with the terratory.
Maradona being spoken in the same breath is testiment to that. Maradona … once a god to the S. American football world, now an obese smackhead that couldn’t run 100 yds without having a coronary.
Best and Maradona are prime examples of how fame and talent can fk up your life.

Understand where you are coming from EC but I will always disagree

I have more respect for the working man who toils for 70 hrs a week in a job that he dosnt like just to keep his family in their home , to pay his bills , and the family are fed ..now to me that is a hero , someone to look up to

I nigh on puke to hear the outrageous sentiments that portray this man as someone to look up to , because he was a good footballer..as I said before, so what

Give me a fireman or a policeman , or an ambulance man ,a brave soldier , now they can earn respect , how about a social worker or a home carer or the millions who volunteer unselfishly to help alsorts , without a mention , the real heros list can go on and on

    A footballer

Well for my money it cuts no ice

Am I to be sad about Beefy, Boycott , or David Beckham ,Steve Redgrave , Will Carling , among others , when their time comes …couldnt give a flying ****
, theve had a ball

So lets stop this rubbish about Georgie
Sorry for his family and thats it

Regards EC appriaciate the strengh in your veiws although wrongly directed as they are ,in my opinion , they are your thoughts and I respect you for that
well George has passed away…I had the privilege of seeing him play football in his prime and he was obviously world class.
Whilst not wanting to play the fuddy duddy here it seems such a shame that he seems to have been as self-destructive in his life as he was with his football talents.God bless George.

only Pele, Cruyff, Maradona and Zidane can be mentioned in the same breath, imo.

I’d have the likes of Platini, Puskas and Rivaldo (before he disappeared up his own arse) on that list. And there are a few others that are worthy of consideration (such as Van Basten or Ronaldinho).

I had the misfortune of seeing Best stagger around Easter Road a few times and it wasn’t a very pretty sight. Not as bad as seeing Muhammed Ali, but still pretty depressing stuff.

He was obviously blessed with a rare talent and imagination and is loved for that. It’s a pity that so much of that talent ended up being unused.

I think Best would have done his British fans a big favour for all their support by not selling out to the American money machine. His departure to LA was a kick in the teeth for every Man U supporter IMO. Very typical of Mr Best to look after his own interests in that manner.
I think that is fair comment. I’m trying not to be unfairly critical here, but he sold out his fans whilst at his prime. He also sold out his teammates, leaving them to saunter down in Div2. Sorry, my honest opinion.

I’ll admit that if I was in his position, i’d give the press as wide berth as possible. If 8000 miles is what it would take, then maybe i’d do the same. You are right, they are parasites. If you saw the post event interviews after his death, you will have heard one of the interviewed (can’t remember who it was) having a dig at how they treat him like scum whilst he was alive and now are speaking about him like he was a god. I think they call that ‘selling copy’ ie. telling the version that is most compatible with selling hard copy.
Any editor that has written a glowing obituary, having slagged him off for his misgivings in the past, is a hypocrite of the highest order. Best was either the villain or the god. He cannot be given both titles, each dependent on whether he is alive or not.

Thats the beauty of forums , yes I feel now I couldhave been too harsh , and in truth have spent years at Crystal Palace watching my team , never in a million years , seeing the skill that GB possesed . I am to young to have seen this man play and really appriaciate the class thats all .But can clearly understand and appriaciate the joy felt by millions who experienced his quality . But on the same vein I cant see myself shedding any tears for todays top sportstars , who I feel have a privileged life.
If you have done nothing else EC and Racing for George , youve giving perspective to appriaciate the skill for the skill regardless of outside interference to the likes of me

                        Regards Sky

It’s amazing what a remotely civil reply will achieve, isn’t it? ;)

Gascoigne is a waster of the highest order. He deserves all he gets IMO ;)
The Best funeral was OTT. I didn’t watch it, to see grown men groveling over the coffin of someone they have never met in their lifetime was truly bizarre. I thought the same of the Diana funeral. Crocodile tears?

I’ve always wondered why there seems to be a self destruct mode built into the best footballers that makes them go out and give their wives a good smacking and then turn to the bottle. It is a strange side effect of kicking around a football in front of 50,000 psychotic loonies ;)
