Some desperately sad news to bring you that Galopin Des Champs tragically died this morning ❤️
In a statement Ruby Walsh said:
“Sadly Galopin Des Champs suffered an injury in his field this morning and could not be saved.
“He was checked a few times throughout the morning but late in the morning when I went to get him for excerise I found him with a severe injury, high up on his near front leg.
“He was attended to by our vets immediately but x-rays revealed extensive unrepairable damage.
“He was a fabulous race horse whose short time with us has left lots of broken hearts but none more so than those of Greg, Audrey and Sarah Turley and Adam Connolly who looked after him for so long.
“He will be sadly missed.”Unbelievable sad news….. Just speechless at the moment. No horse ever deserves that, but this one is especially tragic.
Rest in peace Galopin Des Champs
Shocked & saddened to read that this beautiful horse has lost his life, just when his life beyond racing had begun RIP Galopin de Champ 🥀
Utterly heartbreaking, his official retirement was announced only five days ago, and now he has gone 😭, he was such a beautiful horse RIP legend xxx

Absolutely devastating news, so sad for all his connections. He was a superstar and surely had so much potential for his new eventing career. Heartbreaking.
RIP gorgeous boy.I’m honestly, absolutely devastated by this. He was my favourite horse by a million miles and every time I watched him race I’d keep everything crossed that he wouldn’t get hurt or worse.
I was so happy when he retired, hoping he’d have a long and happy retirement. He was just so, so beautiful.
RIP Gorgeous Galopin 💔💔💔
Very sad news. Especially just after his retirement.
My favourite horse in the last years. And the best chaser in the last 10 years. Lets remember all those beautiful performances!
F***, f***, f*** with a huge side helping of F***.
He survives all that racing jumping fences at 30+mph only to suffer a fatal injury galloping happily around in a field literally 5 mins into his retirement………life sure can suck at times and he certainly deserved so much more than this to happen to him.
RIP and condolences to all connected to him and thank you GDC for all those epic memories.
Unbelievably sad and tragic news 💔😭
Galopin Des Champs was more than just Champion Chaser he was a beautiful soul who won the hearts of all who saw him on the racecourse and off an absolute legend gone too soon.
💔 heartbroken 💔Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...He was a fine sight in full flow, just superb. I feel sorry for Audrey Turley, she was so sweet and genuine talking about him in interviews. I think she used to cuddle him like a bunny rabbit, pretty much. Also his groom Adam.
Statue at Leopardstown please, perhaps way on past the finish line level with the next fence round about where Townend used to eventually be able to wrestle him back to a trot and try to persuade him not to keep pulling and grabbing at the bit to keep going.Breathtaking jumper at speed. Put a bit of class back into a division of grinders.
Poetry on the eye
RIP ChampGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
Absolute shocker! Such a fine, majestic beast of a chaser. At his best he was a force of nature with a granite heart and a tank-like finishing run.
Still trying to get my head around this rotten news.
God bless his soul.
I still can’t believe it. When the pictures of him appeared on social media I just assumed they were still talking about his retirement. I wish he’d won that third Gold Cup; he deserved it. One of the all time greats. And still a relatively young horse with his whole life ahead of him RIP
