Long range dart.
The ‘Minella’ prefix has had a real resurgence in the last month or so with several point winners, and a promising bumper winner tonight. The standout performer by far was Minella Premier, and at a time when prices had dipped, it was still no surprise he made 400,000 at the recent Goffs Spring Sale. There were plenty of impressive performances during the season, but he stood out above any of them. He will be trained by Henderson.
Obviously, someone must have asked the question, and Bet 365 have put him at 25/1. I don’t think that’s at all bad, particularly as most of last year’s bumper form didn’t appear that strong.
He’s by Shantou, and in general it’s a more speed than stamina pedigree (family of Captain Chris), but the full sister to his once-raced dam, was effective between 2m4f and 3m.
December 15, 2024 at 11:19 #1715507I’m guessing this is the 2m5f race? aka the Baring Bingham Novices Hurdle…….
December 15, 2024 at 19:38 #1715530I’ve bet Kel Histoire at 25-1, though I accept that he could end up anywhere
December 26, 2024 at 12:50 #1716352Jasmin De Vaux 12-1
December 28, 2024 at 15:06 #1716811Added The New Lion 5-1. That was more than good today.
December 28, 2024 at 15:24 #1716828Ditto, Mike.
Maybe the Brits have more ammunition than usual for Cheltenham?December 29, 2024 at 13:54 #1716945Ditto.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 5, 2025 at 12:07 #1717563I see JP has just bought The New Lion.
Does anyone know if he has any real contenders for this and/or the Supreme which might make a switch of target for TNL a real possibility?January 5, 2025 at 14:16 #1717580Mister Meggit looks JP’s best novice on this side of the Irish Sea, but he hasn’t been seen since dotting up at Aintree in early November.
Could be a question of keeping the two apart at the Festival.
January 5, 2025 at 14:28 #1717582The Yellow Clay coming here apparently, so cashed him out for the Bartlett. I don’t think he will win this myself, he looks more of a stayer to me.
January 5, 2025 at 15:31 #1717588Mike I think it will be ground dependent, one thing Ive learnt with Elliot over the years is that what he says aint always which race they end up in.
If its a bog, then maybe here, if its good maybe the AB. Hes a trainer Ive avoided AP Cheltenham bets on for many years now.January 5, 2025 at 18:52 #1717604“The Yellow Clay coming here apparently, so cashed him out for the Bartlett. I agree with you Mike, I said at Christmas that Elliott usually thinks his horses are half a mile faster than they are, probably because he trains so many 3 mile handicap chasers that everything else looks whizzy in comparison. If Romeo Coolio ran here I’d be all over him but considering TYC is coming here, even if Romeo Coolio gets beaten over 2 miles at the DRF he’ll probably still go to the Supreme.
(He’s the rightful fav for the Supreme…but I think 2.5 will be even better).January 5, 2025 at 19:56 #1717607For me: Romeo Coolio travelled so well – in a truly run 2m race on goodish (officially “yielding”) ground – that imo he’ll be best kept to 2 miles for the time being. I’m usually reticent about backing novices for a particular Cheltenham race, because their target can change depending on who else the yard or owner has available. However, with Romeo Coollio I have little doubt because of that cruising speed. Indeed, my main worry would be if there was no pace in the Supreme and he ends up racing too keen.
Last time out The Yellow Clay needed every yard to get up over the same distance and surface.. On that run alone I’d say he’ll need 3m at Cheltenham. But having watched today’s race again, he moved into a challenging position much easier. Possibly just learning the game each race. Should be effective at 2 1/2 given the same underfoot conditions as this race. But I agree with Landafar, if good or even good-soft going I can see them changing to the Albert Bartlett to get the necessary test of stamina. That said, I thought he had quite a pronounced rounded action. So might (only “might”) not be as effective away from a soft / heavy surface.

February 2, 2025 at 15:22 #1719658I’ve got an antepost from weeks ago on KDB for the Supreme, 16/1.
Do u reck it’ll be this race or the Supreme?February 2, 2025 at 15:43 #1719665Dont know Wilts they will discuss and ‘juggle the pack’.
February 2, 2025 at 16:10 #1719672Cheers Mike, will have to keep tabs on the decision
