Coolmore relied alot of Galileo, and his progenys record is quite impressive, but seems like they never had a Plan B, who deserves to be their top Stallion now?
I’ve been keeping faith in the crop of Australia. I think Coolmore should have more faith in him as a Stallion, he can become the heir they are looking for.
May 13, 2024 at 13:16 #1694228Quite frankly I don’t think they have one, they have gone through a load of his sons with varying levels of success, they tried the Montjeu line with Camelot and whilst there was success in that, it was obviously not on a level that they would have hoped for.
Then they went to the US sires like War Front, No Nay Never and now Justify and they also bought in top sire Wootton Bassett (who is now 16 yrs old) but I think their hopes going forward may now lie with the Siyouni line with their newest stallions in St Marks Basillica and Paddington.
You look at their website and the number of stallions they have is mind boggling – on their Irish roster they stand 21 in all and Australia they have 13 in total (including some of the Irish ones doing double duty) – oh and they also have 15 US stallions and a staggering 19 NH stallions as well.
They were never going to replicate having another individual stallion of the likes of Galileo again but you can’t say they haven’t tried everything to try and find one.
May 13, 2024 at 17:35 #1694252Bit ironic with all the Galileo progeny Coolmore had, his heir is not owned by Coolmore.
That said. With all the close Galileo / Nothern Dancer blood a lot of the best fillies have these days, using Frankel may be too much inbreeding.
Value Is EverythingMay 13, 2024 at 17:44 #1694253I think one reason why Coolmore keep talking their best two year old up is that With all the Group 1 horses Coolmore have had through their hands… They are yet to have one with form that could be described as “Great” (with a Timeform Rating of 140+).
Value Is EverythingMay 13, 2024 at 18:51 #1694258The Frankel angle is confusing GT. They pay huge sums for Frankel colts and just sour them by using them as pacemakers. I understand the inbreeding issue but they have plenty of money to invest in non- Galileo mares. Even some of Frankel’s lesser sons have gone on to prove decent stallions. Zoffany’s Frankel half-brother Rostopovich, no world beater but a multiple group winner and arguably unlucky not to win an Irish Derby, could have been a good add to the Coolmore stallions but they seem to be in denial.
May 14, 2024 at 10:08 #1694281Breeding is an inexact science and in fairness to John magnier he went big on saddlers Wells when that didn’t seem a certainty. I’m not sure there will be another galileo and the likes of camelot and Australia are way underused IMHO. Hopefully Los Angeles can’t put camelot at the forefront again. They chose Wootton Bassett as an outcross and his 2yos are superb looking. I’ve a feeling he could be a good supplier of top horses.
Folk forget Sir Henry got Frankel due to a gentleman’s agreement so sometimes it’s just plain luck. Btw coolmore have spent a lot on non galileo fillies on the likes of Marsha and quiet reflection. With all the tremendous galileo mares they have I’m sure the top horses will keep coming.May 14, 2024 at 10:21 #1694282Blackbeard …

I haven’t forgotten Mickey and I very much doubt they have. They seem philosophical about it but the fact that they came so close must grate and I often wonder if it explains their apparent reluctance campaign their Frankels as effectively as others.
May 14, 2024 at 13:28 #1694291Coolmore only got Galileo due to ‘plain luck’ too.
May 14, 2024 at 14:52 #1694297If im not mistaken, Coolmore own shares in Sierra Leone. They did well with Scat Daddy and if Sierra Leone continues with the promise he has shown, he could be a good investment as a top stallion.
May 14, 2024 at 16:33 #1694300Accusations of his progeny “not training on” aside I have heard Justify has already been having issues with fertility and this season so it probably won’t be him. The key to finding the next Galileo isn’t just being a great stallion, it’s being able to handle the 200+ mares (plus however many are bred for the Southern Hemisphere) Coolmore tasks their top stallions with for season after season.
