You can actually bet on this one! Betfair and I’m sure other bookies have antepost betting up for the race and boy would I like to have that 3/1 on Snap Decision over here.
Early entries here https://nationalsteeplechase.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Iroquois-MonOvernight-23.pdf Still some cross-entries and jockey musical chairs but the stakes are pretty much set. Of note, Keri Brion’s main jockey Parker Hendricks is out for a few weeks from a concussion he sustained Saturday, and Danny Mullins agreed to take all 6 of his mounts for the day. Should be a nice payday for him!
Two European invaders are running in the Iroquois: Mortlach who was just moved from the Fergal O’Brien barn to William Dowling, and Scaramanga from the Willie Mullins barn who will be ridden by Paul Townend. I believe this will be Townend’s first time riding in the states.
Our should-‘ve-been-2022-champion Snap Decision will be going for his third consecutive win in this race, and IMO if the ground’s good or better he’s definitely the one to beat. He was over-the-top at Far Hills in October but his win in the Temple Gwathmey last month showed me he hasn’t lost a step. The Green Pastures novice stakes is another one that should be good to watch, with much-touted The Hero Next Door taking on Freddy Flintshire, who bolted up to win the Queen’s Cup last out, and Jack Fisher’s top second-year novice Proven Innocent.
Also, Gordon Elliott is sending over I Am Fortunata for one of the maiden hurdles, presumably with the intent of getting him sold to American connections.
All races will be live-streamed on http://www.nationalsteeplechase.com along with the races (over natural hedges!) from Willowdale in Pennsylvania.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 9, 2023 at 20:58 #1647208Barbados I think was a pretty decent stayer on the Flat for AOB and then Jessie Harrington, so I’ll probably have a tickle on him in the maiden, and then Ask Paddington ew again in the main event.
May 12, 2023 at 22:08 #1647568Couple updates:
-Sean McDermott is riding Snap Decision in lieu of the injured Graham Watters. McDermott mostly rides his own horses nowadays (that is, horses he breeds, owns and trains – a true horseman he is) but rode Snap Decision for most of Snap’s novice races and IMO is an improvement on Watters. Jamie Bargary and Tom Garner have split Watters’ other mounts for the day.
-I was wrong about this being Townend’s first trip, I forgot that he had ridden some USA races in 2017 and 2019. He rode Nichols Canyon to a 3rd place finish in the 2019 Iroquois.
-It’s been raining in Nashville most of today and will continue tomorrow so the ground is going to be closer to soft than good. Benefits the Irish horses.
-For dumb Bible Belt gambling law reasons there is antepost wagering offered on the Iroquois but no parimutuel wagering. There is the StableDuel workaround which I think is only open to US players. Snap Decision is 7/5 on StableDuel, and if there were parimutuel wagering he’d be odds-on on raceday, which is why I was saying that 3/1 on him was a good price.
-The Iroquois will apparently be shown live on SKY Racing channel in the UK…which is more TV coverage than it’ll get in the US. I think we just have the livestream.May 12, 2023 at 22:12 #1647570Miss Woodford, could you provide us with a link tomorrow?
Thanks in advance.May 12, 2023 at 22:28 #1647573This link should work everywhere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc0R60O9fhA

I was searching for the books on this earlier to no avail. Huh. I really fancied a couple of bets at the meeting.

Not Scaramanga, he likes good ground.Enjoy the meeting Miss W
May 13, 2023 at 19:31 #1647712Thanks for the live stream link, I’m not long home from Balmoral show (our biggest agricultural+horse show in Northern Ireland) listened to the last race of the Northwest 200 (our biggest motorbike road races) on the radio on the way home and am continuing that holiday spring feeling by watching the Iroquois meeting. First race to the Keri Brion/ Danny Mullins axis and it might not be the last they win today.
May 13, 2023 at 20:55 #1647729Barbados jumped nicely and I’m pleased to see him doing well in his new career. Since I couldn’t back him (thanks modern day Puritans) I have decided to indulge in a different vice and crack open a beer. I’m sure all the clean living folk at the races in Nashville today are restricted to drinking orange juice, right?
May 13, 2023 at 21:32 #1647738Greenasgrass Skybet have a book
Noah and the Ark has beaten snap decision twice as far as I can make out.
Ex Donald McCain.
May have an each way chance.Jumps placings:
1/6551193/5511/1/12-
112 since the switch winning off 600 and 480 day breaks.
Second to hewick us national.
Big ask going up to three miles.
8/1May 13, 2023 at 21:43 #1647741I want to discount Snap’s race at Far Hills as he was thoroughly over the top at that point in the season. In the Lonesome Glory he carried 168lbs to Noah’s 140, that race took a lot out of Snap and he was gallant in defeat. They’re at level weights today, Snap is a course and distance winner and he should be plenty sharp. On the other hand Noah is still underexposed, I don’t think we’ve gotten to see his true potential as a racehorse. Should be an interesting race

Thank you for the stream.
I loved the commentary. He certainly got the hang of saying scaramanga.May 13, 2023 at 22:22 #1647755“It’s been raining in Nashville most of today and will continue tomorrow so the ground is going to be closer to soft than good. Benefits the Irish horses.”
Not Scaramanga, he likes good ground.”American soft and Irish soft not the same it seems
Good race.
I don’t have a skybet account Sam, which is just as well as I would have backed Ask Paddington ew and missed out on a place.May 13, 2023 at 22:26 #1647759When I saw the lack of pace and Snap up front early I got concerned, that’s no place to be for 3 miles. Scaramanga was expertly ridden and moved at just the right moment.
I hope he and Townend stay in the US, if Scaramanga likes the firmer ground (that as Malcolm Denmark pointed out, is still very safe and good to jump on) he’ll love Saratoga. There are sure to be other mounts for Townend in the summer and fall, too, and the money is better than he’ll get anywhere else that time of year.
I do wish that the big Irish trainers would come over here themselves when they send invaders. We pride ourselves on our hospitality at our races and as Shark Hanlon discovered last year the post-race celebrations are legendary!

Willie’s got a dodgy hip, he had surgery and missed a lot of meetings here, then overdid it at Punchestown and got told off by his mum (who was also at the races- she’s 93). She probably wouldn’t let him on the plane. Actually I think he usually sends David Casey or Patrick for races abroad though. Either he likes his own fireside or just wants to be at home to mind the other 199 horses.
I would say Danny Mullins would be more likely than Paul T to stay if either of them did, Townend has a champion jockey title here to defend and the boss no doubt wants him on the nags at Galway and starting to school the winter horses in the autumn. He’s jocked up at Killarney tomorrow so no Nashville celebrations for him!
May 14, 2023 at 00:57 #1647776It was a very enjoyable meeting. Scaramanga looked in trouble before entering the straight, but I guess he had too much in hand.
Must be a very fun meeting with all the stuff between the races and surely a meeting I’d go to when in the US. - AuthorPosts
