Brilliant as Kauto Star is, there is no argument currently that Desert Orchid was the best we’ve seen at Kempton in some considerable time. His defeat of Delius in the Racing Post Chase under 12’3 is significantly better that Kauto Star’s win in last year’s King George. It is eminently possible that the latter will improve on that this year, but let’s not hand the crown over too soon!

Many may agree with you but don’t forget Kauto could have won the King Georege by much further ihad his Jockey wanted to. He has the potential to become even better than Dessie in peoples eyes if he can go on and win a couple more Gold Cups. Simply because it’s like heavyweight boxing against flyweight the former holds more prestige.
But you only ned to look above to find as good a horse as Dessie round Kempton. Gordon always thought One Man V Dessie there would only be one winner. Dessie was at his best racing alone, something he would never have been allowed to do by One Man, who was totally unperturbed by other horse’s company. He also beat better horses and recorded a faster time than Dessie or any other horse did on good to firm …..His other KG was run at Sandown……..the facts that most people ignore are all there but that’s perhaps only natural as Dessie was definately more hyped up and talked about……the truth is One Man was every bit as good as him if not better. I’m glad Arazi posted the above you should have a quick look through them and see the horses one man beat……..some real famous names. He won his races when chasing was was going through a golden era. The opposition wasn’t quite as good in Dessie’s time IMO.
December 31, 2007 at 16:42 #132612January 1, 2008 at 16:07 #132707I loved One Man and its a shame that he doesnt seem to immediately come to peoples minds when talking about/comparing great horses but I think that he’d have struggled to get home if he’d have ever met Dessie in a King George.
January 2, 2008 at 04:41 #132791Who knows but let’s just agree to differ, my bad for brining it up on this thread.
January 2, 2008 at 18:11 #132985do you have the races where kauto falls and then is remounted. Never seen this race but heard it was also amazing

1991 Champion Hurdle – Morley Street[/url:1wskjbs9]Morley Street was superb over 2m 4f. In fact for me he’s as good as any other hurdler that I’ve seen race over that distance with the exception of Istabraq. Kribensis was always one of my personal favourites and he was a very high class hurdler in the 89/90 season.

Yep, a 17.5f Class C novices’ chase at Exeter on January 31st 2005. Favourite-backers upset at odds of 2-11!

You should be able to see that on the ATR website although you’ll probably need to register first…
January 2, 2008 at 22:37 #133052nice one,

January 3, 2008 at 13:56 #133157I would love to share three pieces of brilliant video footage of the great Sea Bird in action, in races he ran prior to his ‘ 65 Derby & Arc wins (which are available on YouTube), but being a complete technophobe, I am unable to.

Himself, I’ve just watched Sea Bird’s victories in the Derby & Arc on Youtube and it’s the first time I’ve seen both races in full. I must admit he did look very speical, his jockey hardly moved on him!
Here’s some more that I’ve put on Youtube:
