I backed Hoo Ya Mal who stood rock still (or scared stiff) when the fireworks went for what seemed ages. I’m sure he was thinking WTF!

Perhaps on Guy Fawkes day we can let off fireworks at every race meeting. I’m sure the Jockey Club will think it a great idea. Encourage those youngsters in.

I’m hearing it won’t be repeated next year or any year, but Hell will freeze over before there’s any apology for it.

Not seen such universal outrage on social media about anything in racing ever and rightly so.

Where did they test it, Salisbury Plain?

The delay was apparently caused by a group of animal rights protesters lying on the track.

Look – we all know now that changing the midweek Derby to a slim silly day Saturday was the biggest misjudgnent in the racing calendar. It’s never worked….kerching !
I made the biggest mistake of my life taking a Saturday job at a little Liptons shop shelf filling. That quid I earned destroyed my youth. No memories see – just work !
Horses should be given two days off a week – if not shoot them and put them out of their MISERY.

To try and do all we can to make sure this is not repeated, it might be good if as many TRFers as possible join me in going to the Epsom Racecourse site and either leaving a bad review or just liking my post.

Did it not occur to the people who had the bright idea of letting of fireworks before the race that many of the horses were wearing red hoods in an attempt to keep them as calm as possible?

I’m a self confessed closeted Roman candle fan but like the horses I’d throw a banger in the bin and take cover. Later on, after consuming some pills, I’d sniff the man that lit then and say…

‘You bloody idiot, you great noisy pillock – what’s wrong with a Roman candle – Bangers are bad for bed.’

“Staff working in the racecourse stables reported their horses becoming upset by the fireworks.”

But Epsom still defends the decision. Incredible.

I can remember being at Wimbledon for the Greyhound St Leger a few years ago, which was run on 5th November.

Fortunately the greyhound authorities were not stupid enough to have fireworks in the old ramshackle stadium but there was a public fireworks display in the area. The bangs and crashes clearly affected some of the dogs, with one or two getting noticeably upset and running poorly. On reflection, the meeting should probably not have been held on that night – but at least the authorities were not directly responsible.

At least the dogs could not do any harm – but a spooked racehorse is potentially dangerous. It was the height of irresponsibility of Epsom. They really should admit they got it wrong and apologise.

It really does beggar belief. Letting fireworks off in daytime looks rubbish….but letting them off before not only a horse race, but THE major race on the UK flat racing calendar. What are these people smoking? Highly strung 3YO colts don’t normally need a lot to upset them….

    Chestnut,
    Google “Epsom Racecourse”,
You should see in a big box on the right hand side of your screen “Epsom Downs Racecourse”
And just below that “google reviews”.
Click on google reviews and up it comes.

This is the reply I got from the Jockey Club

    Good morning,

Thank you for your e-mail and for taking the time to express your views. The Derby is the greatest Flat race in the world and we will always aim to create a special atmosphere.

The pre-race show was thoroughly tested in advance and both timed and placed with our participants in mind.

However, part of constantly striving to improve any major event is to evaluate and we will take all feedback on board in our planning process for next year.

Did they set fireworks off behind a few horses prior to making the decision to see how they’d react then? ( I think not).
