So, with all the stick Spencer gets………… who is your favourite jockey? Apologies if this has already been discused
I think D.Holland is the best from the front in 5-7F races! obviously there’s McCoy, Walsh, Johnson, in the jumps. R Moore heads the flat!May 22, 2009 at 00:45 #229340There are a lot of good jockeys in my opinion. But as with everything they all make mistakes…if those mistakes happen when you are on then you think the jockey is crap!
Eddie Ahern and Paul Hanagan are reliable these days. Tom Eaves is good in the north and neil callan is reliable wherever he rides.
Tend not to choose horses based on jockeys though.
May 22, 2009 at 00:49 #229342Eddie Ahern, i’m rolling around on the floor in stitches.
May 22, 2009 at 01:16 #229352In NH there are only 2 Jockeys that i adore….one is Paul Townend, absoutely Top Class and would carry nearly every other conditional jockey on his back. He is Pure Class and is been moulded into the Next Ruby Walsh.
Ruby Walsh a Festival King…..he is smashing every record….rode just 1 less winner than AP McCoy despite doing it in both Countries and showing immense Commitment to both sides of the Irish Sea……He record at the festival and big meetings is the best around. I love him, I adore him….he is the best he is Ruby Walsh.
On Flat….I love the the 3 Knights at the round table…..Kinane/Murtagh/Fallon…….do like Kevin Manning now aswell think he top of the bunch outside the Greats. Fran Berry is also a Jockey going places as soon as Mick decides to pack it in
May 22, 2009 at 01:46 #229363Flat – Jim Crowley, Jimmy Fortune, Ryan Moore
Jumps – Paul Townend, McCoy, Ruby, Nathalie Dessouter (in France)They are the main jockeys i look out for on a daily basis – only a matter of time before Miss Dessouter becomes the first woman to ride a Grade 1 winner over jumps.
May 22, 2009 at 12:27 #229399We’re currently using John Egan – his feedback post race is excellent. If we had a horse suitable for an apprentice then I would use Paul Pickard as I’ve been very impressed him.
May 22, 2009 at 13:10 #229404Tuffers,
I seem to recall JE being a good judge of pace and quite impressive in coming from the back to win on the line in a couple of races at, I think, York two or three seasons ago. I recall it was softish going and the races were probably a mile and a half or thereabouts. He timed it to perfection and at the time I thought he was really going places. I still look out for him in longer distance races though I’m not sure he’s as hot these days or just not getting the right horses.
A couple for the anoraks: Ron Hutchinson, Joe Sime, (flat); Terry Biddlecombe(jumps) – I’m sure he was riding a 20/1 winner I had as a schoolboy which set me off on the high and the low roads. Could it have been called The Hustler?

As I said in my post "There are a lot of good jockeys in my opinion. But as with everything they all make mistakes…if those mistakes happen when you are on then you think the jockey is crap!" I have not backed anything ridden by Eddie that has been given a shocker.
Agree with Tuffers. Paul Pickard has looked like a promising young apprentice. Rode a great race on Exit Smiling earlier in the year when they won at Southwell. And Obviously William Buick is on top form at present.
May 22, 2009 at 14:30 #229413you dont call him betfair eddie for nothing boss.
May 22, 2009 at 14:59 #229416…….at the time I thought he was really going places…..
sadly the trouble seems to start once he gets there, witness Melbourne Cup 2008 and Hong Kong 2002.
very talented jockey nonetheless and always to be considered, particularly on outsiders.
May 22, 2009 at 15:00 #229417you dont call him betfair eddie for nothing boss.
I dont bet on betfair so its irrelevant to me. I know Eddie used to have a bit of a bad boy reputation and make mistakes but imo he has matured in last couple of years.
Also want to mention Jim Crowley. A good horseman and good on first time out 2yo’s. Not necessarily from a winning a race point of view, but more from teaching them something and ensuring they enjoy it. I think he sees the bigger picture with the 2yo’s he rides.
May 22, 2009 at 15:30 #229420I think D.Holland is the best from the front in 5-7F races!
Interesting to learn, that along with Willie Supple, Holland is considered by Patrick Veitch (pro punter & owner) not worthy of use.
I like Murtagh ( Chester apart ) and Ryan Moore. Joe Fanning is not too bad either.
I steer clear of Mr. Spencer. An odd little fellow. Can’t fathom him out at all.

May 22, 2009 at 15:39 #229424Give me Spencer any day!
May 22, 2009 at 16:21 #229430Ruby Walsh a Festival King…..he is smashing every record….rode just 1 less winner than AP McCoy
What do you mean by "rode just 1 less winner than AP McCoy"?
May 22, 2009 at 16:37 #229434Tony McCoy rode 191 winner this year
Ruby Walsh rode 190 winners this yearTony McCoy won 2.5 Million in Prize Money this year
Ruby Walsh won 4.9 Million in Prize Money this yearUnless of course i been told porkies but i pretty sure that is accurate for the 08/09 season just ended
May 22, 2009 at 17:03 #229442I see where you are coming from now. According to RP Stats:
GB: McCoy rode 186 winners (£2.303m) to Walsh’s 69 (£2.359m)
IRE: Walsh rode 121 winners (£2.605m) to McCoy’s 5 (£242K)so you are correct in your statement that Walsh did ride just 1 winner less than McCoy in both countries
However he did it BECAUSE he puts so much effort into riding in both islands as opposed to DESPITE this.
May 22, 2009 at 17:55 #229445I don’t find that jockeys of today seem to have the same appeal as jockeys of the past.
