Flat: Giant’s Causeway with a close second going to Bosra Sham

Hurdlers: Deanos Beano and I also had a soft spot for Ned Kelly.No horse has come close to sheer character guts and charisma of Desert orchid..in my time anyway. By todays standards it is astonishing how often he competed too
Kauto is the one jumps horse who has captured imagination in a similar way
As much as i was taken by STS and he proved profitable too (although thats not really a good criteria) I will agree with Max on Dancing Brave. Unlike STS perhaps, he genuinely beat great horses. Astonishing to watch too
Wilsons mention of Dayjur is very welcome
Of lesser rated horses, monkerhostin is a fave too for a variety of reasons

Big fan of Desert Orchid and Kauto Star. Also Moscow Flyer. Master Minded as well. The QMCC was hard to watch.
On the flat – New Approach. He’s been overlooked in my opinion and would give StS a run

I had a really awful 2009 but the GN was a high point of it. And knickers to the money (I stuck to my usual small stakes & don’t mind the resulting small return), it was the whole story.
Pretty new to the game, but I’d say Kauto Star, just, over Desert Orchid.
Of the lesser-rated horses, Eric’s Charm.

My favourite horse over recent years was Puntal but also have soft spots for Well Chief, Grey Abbey and Rooster Booster.
On flat I loved Persian Punch (who had the heart of a lion) and Rising Cross (who was tiny but managed to finish 2nd to Alexandrova in the 2006 Oaks).

I could list plenty more but I would say this lot sit pretty near the top
I’m ashamed to say, mort, that I have had the book ‘The Dikler and his Circle’ on my bookshelf for year and have never read it.It has a wonderful photo of Pendil jumping the last in the 1973 Gold Cup.Who would have thought the big horse would get past him! What a race that was, I’ve never seen it before. There’s another photo of Darkie Deacon with The Dikler and Charlie Potheen. What times they must have been at Saxon House….
Viking Flagship – the toughest old thing even if not the best.

I love the dogs.
