As we’re talking abuot presenters and tv channels I thought I would put forward my ideal team of presenters and commentators
Anchorwoman: Clare Balding, despite some people’s dislike I think she bridges the gap between entertainment and punditry well asking intelligent questions and showing an enthusiasm for the sport
Commentator: Simon Holt, not that keen on too many and he seems the best. Although his course picks are usually rubbish
Pundits: Francome, Tanya, Nick Luck, David Duggan and Gareth O’Brien.
January 5, 2007 at 11:33 #35205Quite a motley collection Aragorn, I’ve got to be suspicious of anyone who puts up Tanya for any broadcasting job :o
I’m no fan of Balding, the lazy Francome, when was the last time he put up a paddock negative? or Duggan. The other two are okay.
Personally I would have Hislop presenting although she’s not as good as she was and does far too much slagging off of the noble beasts, with John Hunt assisting, Freemantle & Willoughby the punditry and go along with the excellent Simon Holt (better when not doing it for C4) as commentator, you say his course picks are rubbish but he can only say what’s gone down well.
January 5, 2007 at 11:57 #35206Francome can give the odd glimpse of insightful stuff – but usually it’s ‘they are all jumping well – especially the old boy in front’ just before it drops back through the field
Tanya – Can’t abide her.

January 5, 2007 at 12:15 #35207paddock shots with comments from a decent paddock judge and going down shots
Hoilles commentating, Johnson too (volume down when he’s on though)
No need for the waffle from other Presenters/pundits -get shut

January 5, 2007 at 12:35 #35208EW, without the waffle there would just be silence for extended periods?! Not good tv!
Yeats, Lydia isn’t half the presenter Balding is for me, she may know more about horse racing but she couldn;t carry a show in the way Balding does. She flaps around too much. Not that I dislike her particularly.. And she’s strangely attractive in a weird kind of way!
Perhaps they could spend more time before hand putting together VT’s on each horse to give the punter more visual clues rather than all the paddock waffle which really doesn’t help a great deal..
January 5, 2007 at 13:04 #35209I also find Lydia strangely attractive in a weird kind of way…..not sure what it is about her.
I like Clare Balding but only when she’s not with Willie Carson. John Francome is not too good at understanding the formbook but is a better paddock judge than I ever will be. Simon Holt is my favorite commentator – much better than Jim Mcgrath imo. I’d also prefer Angus Loughran in the betting ring.
Loughran? Statto? Trampo? – "There has been some E/W support for……" Who gives a toss?
January 5, 2007 at 13:22 #35211
Loughran was once cruelly, but accurately, demolished one of those late night comedy quiz shows as a man –
‘with the perfect face for radio and the ideal voice for a mime artist’

January 5, 2007 at 14:02 #35214His knowledge outranks Statto – not that I’m a McCririck fan either.
