Many newspapers, tabloids in particular are happy to provoke a libel suit because the ensuing case will generate another story to fill the paper. It makes economic sense, the revenues from increased sales balancing out the penalty of damages awarded.
The forum is, of course, non- commercial, but if it was a business, it might be worth provoking the anger(and libel actions) of a few people to gain some very valuable, if costly, publicity.
October 10, 2007 at 06:57 #118796betfair have done exactly the same and have said they will remove posting rights of people who don’t comply. it’s not massively different from imposing reporting restrictions is it ?
October 10, 2007 at 07:53 #118800Hello,
One person we cannot upset is Mr Fallon, as he has stated that he cannot use a computer!

October 10, 2007 at 08:39 #118803Whatever happened to free speech? Censorship on TRF, why?
Another important aspect of a free society is the right to a fair trial. Commenting publicly on a case in progress prejudices that right.
October 10, 2007 at 12:43 #118846Perhaps the Chat Room could be used to discuss issues of the day! Say 9pm each night!
Sorry if this post also contravenes any judicial thingies!
October 10, 2007 at 13:17 #118852In theory, we could all report on the case, but the moderator would have to vet every post in order to assess possibile libel or comments which would lead to contempt, so it is probably preferable to stick an outright ban on it.
You never know when some idiot is going to come out with similar rubbish that has already been posted (and removed) on the betfair forum.October 10, 2007 at 14:41 #118871It’s about time the libel laws in this country were modified if not abolished.
Crooks continue to flourish whilst using the ‘law’ as protection.October 10, 2007 at 14:46 #118874This is not about libel. It’s about contempt of court.
October 10, 2007 at 15:05 #118879Alternatively, if any of you simply have little more than a pathological urge to make up spurious rumours about any of the accused parties, you could make them so fantastical that no court would dignify them with a formal response; e.g. the prime suspect’s real name is Brett Tannoy, he invented the Pritt Stick, and he still likes to have his tea cut into shapes by his nan.

October 10, 2007 at 15:06 #118880Actually, probably don’t do that. Extremely silly.

Was just thinking the same thing myself.. shouldn’t really create any problems, as long as all transcripts are immediately destroyed..
Seriously though, a very good idea.
October 11, 2007 at 06:26 #118939to be honest i’m not much of an in-running fan, i would prefer just to wait for the result
December 7, 2007 at 12:07 #5895Breaking News Fallon Trial
Case against all jockeys has collapsed.
December 7, 2007 at 12:08 #129278RP confirming the same story.
Judge dismissed them as having "no case to answer".
Hardly surprising.
December 7, 2007 at 12:33 #129293As soon as it was revealed that Kieren had ridden a higher percentage of winners than he normally achieves in the races they were claiming were fixed, the trial became a farce.
December 7, 2007 at 12:49 #129304There is just one word i’ll remember from today, regarding this prosecution and outcome …
“… inept”
Lee Mottershead
The case should never have gone to court. The evidence was flimsy at best.
December 7, 2007 at 13:51 #129329Absolutely delighted with this, Keystone cops strike again.
I’ve been following this trial with closely with disbelief.
