I was very impressed with Stone Age today.
He’s won by five and a half lengths and, while the runner up only had an OR of 98 going into the race, when I look at the rest of the field I have to think the runner up has run a career best.
French Claim is OR 107, Atomic Jones is 104, Duke De Sesa is 106, Manu Et Corde is 101 and Great Max is 105.
I rate Stone Age 116 on today’s effort and could have rated him even higher.
I think it’s easily the best trial all week, he’s by Galileo out of a 1m2f winner so will stay 1m4f, and he will be hard to beat on Epsom Downs.
3/1 is fair.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 9, 2022 at 06:30 #1597461Stone Age’s wins have been on good ground. El Bodego has good 2yo numbers but all on testing ground. Regarding a Derby prep Ferguson said “he’s got a 2000 Guineas entry but I think it’ll be too firm here”. So he may struggle on the ground in the Dante. He’s by Kodiac as well which doesn’t give me Derby winner vibes.
May 9, 2022 at 09:00 #1597465I could be wrong but Stone Age’s racing action doesnt stike me that it would suit Epsom. The cambers could be a problem for a horse his size with those gangly legs.
May 9, 2022 at 12:41 #1597477Looking at El Bodego’s form it’s all stacking up. From the St Cloud race even the seventh and eighth have come out and won listed events and the ninth was placed in a Group 3. The only reservation is that his last three runs have been in France so they may be looking at the Prix du Jockey Club.
May 9, 2022 at 15:21 #1597484The stoute horse is a crazy price now Jesus
I’m glad obrein was so open about luxembourg as I was strongly considering backing him for the arc
May 9, 2022 at 18:22 #1597500Win or lose, Desert Crown is an absurd price.
Stone Age has run the stand-out trial for me – he’s beaten a fair few 100+ OR colts easily and it’s hard to believe they all ran below form.
I’d like him as much as Luxembourg if Luxembourg was still in the race.
The time wasn’t great – that box went unticked – but for me he’s bred to relish 1m4f and he’s the right favourite IMO.

Bruce Raymond, racing manager for owner Saeed Suhail: “The plan is to run him on Thursday. He works very well. Sir Michael is bringing him along very gradually. A month ago you certainly wouldn’t think about any Derby, but he’s starting to hit the right note now.
“Our horse will stay very well and whatever he does in the Dante he’ll improve a lot for it. I wouldn’t worry about him getting beaten in the Dante because it’s his first run of the season and Sir Michael’s are not yet firing on all cylinders.
“He will be a decent horse – whether he comes right for the Derby I don’t know – but he’ll be a good horse later.”
Don’t exactly sound bullish either do they
May 9, 2022 at 20:03 #1597507Absolutely ridiculous price. He’s ran once at Nottingham yet he’s vying for second fav for the Derby. He could be a decent colt but to be so low is taking the mickey. The fact he’s only run once suggests he’s hard to get right thereby making the price even more absurd. Well know more after the dante but you cannot possibly fancy him to win the Derby after one win at Nottingham.
It’s normally aidens horses that are hyped so highly amused it’s a stoute horse.May 9, 2022 at 21:52 #1597512It makes me think of another Stoute horse: Green Green Desert.
He won a late season maiden at Newmarket and ended up becoming favourite for the 2,000 Guineas. He finished 8th in the Craven, did not run in the Guineas and never won another race on the Flat.
He ended up having an improbable but reasonably successful career over jumps, even finishing fourth in a Champion Chase.
Desert Crown for the Triumph Hurdle?

May 12, 2022 at 15:28 #1597719Magisterial is beautifully bred and I was quite impressed with his reappearance run.
I’m hoping for a good run in the Dante and have taken 25-1 ew for the Derby.I’ve also had a little ew tickle on Bluegrass ew at 50-1; Aidan has Derby contenders galore I suppose but I think he’s better than his Ballysax run.
May 12, 2022 at 15:52 #1597725Well we know the no 1 non-Irish Derby hope now.
May 12, 2022 at 16:06 #1597729No mere “morning glory” this Desert Crown.
He will take a lot of beating on Epsom Downs.

May 12, 2022 at 16:56 #1597735As I said 3/5 , I was at Nottingham to watch the debut of Desert crown and was taken by the way he powered away. I am on at 33 and 25 ew, so I was delighted at the performance today. The could be a lot more to come as Bruce Raymond made the point last week that whatever the result there is a lot to work on. With Nathaniel as the sire, and I think also of Enable the extra distance could also be a bonus?. Obviously plenty of dangers, but for once in my life I have a anti post voucher that may return!!.
May 12, 2022 at 17:14 #1597737Yes Jonty considering the trainer said he was only just ready to run you would think he should come on another chunk.
May 12, 2022 at 17:37 #1597741Well I surely hope so mate, don’t think there will be a lot between Desert crown and Stone-age timeform ratings after that. But he his a big solid lump, and as we all know they need to act on the track.
